WESTPORT NOTES
(Uur Own (Joirespondent.; WESTPORT, August 8. I Mr N. V. Lovell, Manager of the '“Grey River Argus” Company, has ' concluded a tour of .the Buller district. I and his visit should produce good results in the minds of the workers, and should tend towards the increased ’popularity of .he workers’ paper. Mr ; Lovell visited Millerton, Stockton, j Denniston, Burnett’s Face, WaimangaI roa, Ciranity, Tiroroa and the smaller 1.. ownships. At Westport, a meeting of the waters.dei's was addressed, and i Mr Lovell urged that example was a powerful factor in mak.ug the “Ar- ; gus” popular, and helped to promote i its advancement as an advertising I medium in the district. From a literI ary viewpoint it had very few rivals on the Coast, and should be read by all ‘who were de: irons of forming a criti- , cal judgment of the many questions I wlfch which they were confronted at present. Mr Lovell also emphasised j the fact that his Company had decided upon the appointment of a fullI time Correspondent to be resident in I Westport, and lie was sure that the decision would show good re-ul s. | The space devoted to Buller activities | would have a thoroughly local atmos--Iph ere. At the conclusion of the mcet- ' ing, Mr L. Tredenick, President of the Union, accepted a resolution which I inv ted the local agent .to canvass members on pay Friday with a view 'o .securing subscribers to the “Argus. ” I The resolution was carried unanimous|>y- | In the mining districts, Mr Lovell was also cordially received, and many | details that would ensure a regular ! delivery of the paper were attended to. At Tiroroa, arrangements were made i for a. thorough canvass of the locality, ■ and Mr F. O’Gorman was appoin'ed to
act as Correspondent to the ‘ 1 Argus”' in that district. Mr Lovell, accompanied by Mrs Lovell and Master Ron-1 nie Lovell,'left on return to Greymouth | on Friday. Air W. Barber,Treasurer of .the West I Coast Miners’ Council, has been a visi-1 tor to Westpor? on Council business. ' The late George McNeil was buried ! in the Ora wait! Cemetery, and the i uncial was well attended by Millerton | residents, where he was popularly re-. garded for the past eight years. | After a long illness, borne w'th Christian fortitude, Mrs an old : resident of the district, has passed I away. She leaves a husband and six of a family to mourn their loss. As a mark of appreciation of the ; services rendered to St. Canicc's Choir and St. Patrick’s Concert Party, Mrs E. Norris was recently the | reu'pient of a valuable presentation by j the members of those bodies. The Ingleside conducted monthly ! under he auspices of the local Cale-I donian Society, has lost little of its attractiveness to members, and the function held recently reflected oldtime associations which has made the monthly gatherings so popular. Messrs I Banks, Westpor', and Meikle, Black-1 ball, supplied appropriate music. The immunity which Westport has enjoyed from crime of a serious character was broken on Friday last, when Frederick Upham, a young married man, was allegedly shot dead by his w ; fe, Lena Upham, aged 22 years. Beyond the fact that .the case is engaging earnest police attention and witnesses are being interrogated nothing materi- I ally additional to what has already been published need be said at the moment. It is understood that the wife, who is under arrest, will be charged with the alleged murder of her husband. She appeared before Magis-1 trates to-day, when the proceeding, were of a formal nature, and the usual remand was granted. The inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of the husband was opened on Saturday, when proceedings were con- | fined to evidence of identification. A good number of railway casuals 1 on the Westport sect-on of the Government Railways received notices yes'erday dispensing with their services. Mr and Mrs J. Mears and child, of Rotorua, are spending a holiday with the former’s mother in Palmerston Street.
