VALEDICTORY

LIEUTENANT A. J. MOORE. ! There was a gathering of about fifty officers and N.C.O. ’s from West- , port, Reeftqn, Hokitika and Greymouth at Herb. Moore’s Cabaret last evening on the occasion of a farewell smoke concert tendered Lieutenant A. J. Moore, who, after nearly six years t in charge of the Greymouth office of * the Defence Department, has been 3 transferred to Invercargill. During the evening, the following toasts were honoured: “The King.” proposed by Captain Fitzgerald; “The New Volun.iteer Force,” proposed by Lieut. Moore and responded to by Lieut. Caldwell, I who is in charge of the Grey Volun- | teer Force; “Our Guest” was pro- ! posed by Majo r Campbell (Reefton), i: and the following spoke to the toast: j Captain Fitzgerald (Territorials), Capj tain Davis (Technical School Cadets), | Captain C. Bleach (Hokitika Senior j Cadets), Sergeant-Majors L. Shuttle--1 worth. A. Johnston, and Jordan (Greymouth staff), and Dennison and Drumgoole (N.C.O.’s). Recitations were given by Messrs C. • Brown and R. Tilleyshort. and songs |by Major Campbell and Sergeant Payne, while items by an orchestra of Territorials and N.C.O.’s and community singing added to the enjoyment of the function. Major Campbell (Reefton), on behalf of the C. Company of the Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast Regiments, made the presentation of a handsome travelling rug to Lieutenant Moore; while Captain Bleach (on behalf of the Hokitika N.C.O. ’s) presented the with a case of pipes and a tobacco pouch. In felicitous speeches both referred to the sterling qualities of the guest, and expressed their best wishes for his future good health and happiness. Lieutenant Moore appropriately responded. and thanked one and all for their kindness to him. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought a most enjoyable evening to a close. Lieutenant and Mrs .A. J. Moore leave by Thursday’s express for Invercargill, where Lieutenant Moore takes up his position as Adjutant of the Southland Regiment.
