HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, June 25. Mr and Mrs J- Muse hump, of Karaniea, are the guests of Mr and Mrs T. iStopforth, Weld Street. Mr Morgan, a Greymouth applicant, has been appointed to the position of Laundry Engineer at the Hokitika Mental Hospital. The motor ship Gael sailed this morning at 7 o ’clock for Wellington, with a cargo of timber, tallow and hides. She returns via Nelson.

There was a very heavy frost this morning, but the day was beautifully fine.

I A considerable number went south for the ceremony of formally opening the operations of the Okarito Five Mile Beach dredge to-day, those present including Messrs J. Donovan ( re ‘ presenting the County Chairman, Mr M. Keenan, who was unable to travel south) and W. Jeffries, W. Searle (exchairman-, with W. Milner (County Overseer). The shares of the dredging company are now showing a rising price on the Stock Exchange. The (Ledge, in its preliminary work, is reported’ to be operating splendidly. After the first 72 hours run, the wash up revealed 40 ounces of gold. Some of the Directors of the Company were at Okarito for the function, and the [event should pass off very happily. The prospects of thi s dredge are stimulating interest in beach workings in the south. A large area has been pegged off behind the Okarito lagoon, and prospecting with a keystone borer is to take place. This enterprise is in the hands of an Auckland company. Other claims have been pegged off along the sea beach, where several strangers to the district have become interested, and intend putting on small plants to work the ground. A fair amount of gold is being cleaned up along the southern beaches of late. It is understood that the Greymouth broadcasting station is shortly to put a number of Hokitika citizens through .ts Mock Court on behalf of the local unemployed. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day the Police charged a young man with theft of £6 and £5 from hi s employer. Sergeant King stated restitution was being made and the employer was willing to overlook the present lapse and continue employment. Mr Murdoch, for acused, supported the past excellent character, and asked for suppression of the name. His Worship said under the special circumstances he. would convict the accused on both charges and grant probation for one year, subject to a prohibihion order being taken out and that he abstain from gambling and frequenting biHard rooms, with restitution of the money. 11 is Worship ordered the name io be suppressed. The B< rough Inspector charged J. Tunis with riding a motor vehicle without a proper number plate thereon. A fine of 20s with: costs 20 s (id was imposed. E. Lewis was charged with using a motor cycle without a proper plate and unlicensed, and was fined 20s and costs 20s 6<l. 11. Preston, on a charge of failing to have a rear light en a motor cur after sunset, was fined 5s and costs 20s 6d. The cases dealt with by Warden Meldrum to-day at the Warden’s Court were:—.Jos.
