OPERA HOUSE—MATINEE AND EVENING. “FORWARD MARCH.”

“Forward March,” with Buster Keaton in hilarious adventures as a greenhorn “doughboy” at the front, is the attraction at this afternoon’s matinee and evening. Not only is the new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer production one of the most pretentious vehicles in l which the frozen-faced Keaton has appeared, but it is built on a new idea, with legitimate thrills intersepersed with the laughs, and a pretty romance, too, running through it. The next chapter of the new serial will also be screened at this afternoon’s matinee. | BLACKBALL—TO-NIGHT f “THE VAGABOND KING.’* i “The Vagabond King” will be screened at Blackball to-night and “Strictly Unconventional,” on Mondav . and Tuesday. I COMMENCING MONDAY. “COMMON CLAY.’ I Perhaps it’s a truism to say good I drama is always good, but worth while 1 offerings of the stage find 'a greater I field in talking pictures. A case in I point is “Common Clay,” Cleves Kinkead’s Harvard prize play in which Jane Cowl rose to fame. Under the guidance of Victor Fleming, Constance Bennett seems about -.to reach interna- , tional eminence in the screen version . of this drama to be screened for a season commencing with the matinee on I Monday at 2.30 p.m. Miss Bennett’s work is the outstanding feature. He’’ • portrayal of the pleasure-loving girl whom Fate seems bent on destroying, and who manages to reach happiness ! after 'a heart-breaking struggle, is one ; of the finest things the speaking screen I has yet given us. Lew Ayres, the | youngster who scored in “All Quiet on i the Western Front,’2 is remarkably con- • vincing in the male role of the likeable, but thoughtless youth who causes Miss Bennett ’s major difficulties. Those fine players, Tully Marshall, Matty Kemp, and Beryl Mercer, give splendid performances. Hale Hamilton, Purnell Pratt, Charles McNaughton, Ada Williams and Genevieve Blinn all do notable work in their roles—in fact, the entire cast is quite perfect.
