(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, June 12. After a cloudy dawn, rain se ( t in about 10 a.m., and the day has been cold and inclement. In Westland County and the Boroughs of Ross and Hokitika, the issues of motor licenses so far this year number about six hundred. There are more to be issued, as last year’s total was eight hundred, and the traffic inspectors have an eye out for motorists who have dallied over their licenses.
Mr J. Cameron, former Dairy Factory Manager, at Arahura, and now on the Glaxo Company’s staff, is here on a visit.
| The Railway Department is strengthening the local railway bridge with i quantities of stone from Cobden quarry, which are being placed around the piles to prevent any recurrence of the scouring caused by the recent big flood. At a meeting of the Competitions Society there were present: Messrs D. J. Evans (President), Mrs McGavin, Messrs W. E. Richards, J. Conning, 11. Sweney, H. G. Coles, H. Osmers, and i Rev. Knowles Smith. The Treasurer ; (Mr Cunning) presented the balance i sheet. The year opened n credit | balance of £l5O, which now was re- | duced to £lO7. Included in the expenditure was £ll carried over from the previous year. The deficit on the recent festival was £32. Rev. K. Smith said 1 the reduction in" prize money caused I complaints. Mr Evans said where it
I had been ascertained the festival would i show a. substantial loss, it was decided : to reduce the prize money as provided ■ in the rules in classes with entries not I of the required number to justify first j and second prizes at the schedule ra>e. ; Th© same practice was adopted last I year in the small classes. The saving | was £24. If that had not been made I the loss on their festival would have ' been £56. Rev. Knowles Smith thought with the funds available the full ex- , penditure should be met. Mr Richards concurred. The majority present were in agreement, with the Chairman’s view. It Was pointed out the position had difficulties, but the Society was bound by the rules, and funds should be conserved. The judging costs had , increased and were likely to be higher in the future. As to Judges next year, it was stated Mr Barton Ginger would judge the elocution section. It was dei cided to write a Christchurch gentleman relative to judging the musical ( section, and to enquire from Miss Waugh for a recommendatiaon for a judge for dancing section. It was intimated that Messrs Conning and Osmers would be unable to act further as , Treasurer and Secretary respectively. Mr Evans said it was hoped that before the meeting came round in November any heart burnings would have passed away, and they would all be ready to co-operate, if retaining the confidence of the members of the Society. Thr President reported he had telegraphed Miss Collogan on behalf of the Society expressing sympathy in her serious loss by fire, his action being endorsed. It was stated that the Lyttelton Cup won by Miss Collogan had escaped any damage in the fire. It was decided to write Miss R. Morgan a letter of congratulation on her success at the Christchurch Competitions.
