MILLERTON’S PLIGHT
( SERIOUS DISTRESS Mine Mostly Idle APPEAL TO GOVERNMENT. (Special to “Argus.’’) WESTPORT, June 12. This morning telegrams' wore despatched to the Prime Minister by both Mr H. E. Holland, M.P., and Mr R. MeGregor (Secretary of the Millerton (Miners:’ Union), regarding the serious position which now exists at Millerton. 1 Mr McGregor’s telegram intimated that, as the result af the unemployment in Millerton, the mines having worked only 49 days for the last six months, distress and starvation are prevalent in the township, arid lie askled whether the Government can do anything in the way. of granting ira'mediato relief.
I Mr Holland in 'his wire To the Prime Minister, stressed the fact of the short time! worked, and the resultant, hardiship and the distress, and he endorsed Mr McGregor’s request for prompt assistance.
1 Mt- Holland further urged that the i Government should either make an adequate money grant, or else place substantial orders! for Millerton coal to ensure the working of the mine as I from Monday next. I Mr Holland has arranged to visit Millerton on Sunday morning, when Ihe will be accompanied by Miss Agnes I Holland. They will metet the residents at 11 a.rrr., and arc hopeful that, In addition to tine men, there will be a representative attendance of miners’ wives.
