HOKITIKA, .May 6,
The following telegram was received by the Westland Racing Club to-day from, the {Secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club: “District Committee j and Canterbury Jockey Club support objection by Ashburton Club to your holding a race meeting at Riccarton, May 30th, therefore cannot recommend.’’ As May 30th was consider* led the most convenient date the holding of the meeting is now doubtful IA message has been despatched enquiring what date will be approved. There are as yet no particulars of the grounds of the objection. The Com mittee of the local Club meet to-night to discuss the position as the Club is anxious not to allow the meeting to go by default. The Minister of Internal Affairs has offered to sanction any date for the race meeting approved by the 'Racing Conference. The Valuer-General notifies that the revised valuation roll for the portion of the Southern Riding south of the Waiho River will be open for inspection at the County Chambers from 6th until 30th May. The Town Finance Committee of the West land County Council met last evening, there being present: Messrs' J. IL Murdoch (voted to the chair), W. Jeffries, M. FI. Houston and W. Searle (County Chairman<’ Accounts for the month of April totalling £1177 10s 6d were passed for payment. There wore present at the meeting of the Hokitika Library Committee last evening, Messrs D. J. Evans (Chairman). T. W. Due, J. Niven, G. Heinz and 11. M. Coulson. Apologies were received from Messrs Col os, Stuart and Wilson. The Borough Council wrote reducing the annual subsidy from £l2O to £lOO. Accounts for March totalled £l3 Jss lid. and for April £l2 17s 5d wore passed for payment. Mr J. Wallace presented a framed photograph of early pioneers which was received with thanks, for the public reading room. The photograph includes Messrs D. Toomey (L'brarian), J. Wallace. R. Ross and J. J. Breeze. The Chairman explained how th<« long arm of coincidence operated at times. Some few months ago. a banker from South Africa on tour of Ihe Dominion, visited the southern glaciers of Westland, which with the scenery generally lie admired very greatly. When passing through Hokitika he was moved to pay visit to the Public Library and in particular fo the Museum room which contains so many objects of general interest. Hi? attention was attracted by several stands of arms now almost obsolete, but interesting as exhibiting the type of weapon used in the various wars. Among the riles were half a dozen captured Boer War rifles, which had been sent here by the New Zealand Minister of Defence. Thu South African visitor was greatly interested in the rifles which he noted carefully find'ng one with a name engraved on tlu* stock. On his return home he enquired about the whereabouts of the owner, but found he had died. His (laughter was st’ll alive and expressed a wish to have the rifle returned as a memento of her parent. It was at this stage that the visitor wrote to the Mayor of Hokitika setting out the position in interesting detail, and asking if it were possible to have the rifle returned. The civic authorities are in communication with the Defence "Minister On tin* matter, and the Committee gave unanimous approval for the return of the gun. and pleasure was expressed at the opportunity of do’ng so. In due course, therefore, the , Boe> rifle will find its way back to ; South Africa and become more iufer- | esting still as a family heirloom to those concerned. 1 The results of the Chrvsantlionium Show to-day were:—Six- Japanese (3 i varieties) —A.
