The Minister of Marine, commanding the punitive expedition, refused the Bishop of Funchal’s offer to act as mediate,-, declaring that nothing but unconditional surrender was acceptLISBON, April 29. A serious student movement against President Carmona’s dictatorship is developing in the universities throughout the country. Lisbon students rioted and hoisted the Red Flag. Oporto students barled themselves i:i the School of Medicine. resisted the police, and finally rushed out, some climbing down some scaffolding, which collapsed. Ono was killed and nineteen were injured.
SLAUGHTER DELAYED. BISHOP’S INTERVENTION. (Received April 30 at 11 p.m.) LISBON, April 30. The departure of a hospital ship to Madeira has caused rumours of sanguinary fighting there. The Government, however, stated tonight that no fighting has occurred, as operations have been suspended owing to the Bishop of Funchal’s mediation.
