Thp tow*.iship on Sunday last was peaceful. In common with all other districts the day was oue of mourning ( as a mark of respect to the memory : of those who lost their lives in the i earthquake visitation. The bowling green was deserted and the club’s flag ' 1 was flown at half mast; all sporting I ' events were abandoned, and the Min- ' ers ’ UnicAi meeting was postponed. i The annual meeting of the local un- 1 ion was held on Thursday last and was ; t well attended. Mr W. Clark occupied i > the chair. |l The Secretary reported that as a re- 1 suit of an interview with the Hon. W-.'t IL Mclntyre, the amount overpaid to boys engaged on relief work would be t refunded. Mr E. Lock who was un- 1 avoidably absent from the meeting, wrote explaining his action in attend- 1 ing a, meeting of the recently-formed 5 unemployment committee at* Westport. 1 A report of a recent meeting of the 1 directorate of the “Grey River Argus” wfts received. Correspondence < was read from Mr Schadiek, asking I c for particulars as to the number of ’ unemployed in the district. Arising out of a report 1 of a deputation to the management in | ] connection with, disputes, exception was 1 taken to the company’s refusal to pay < an allowance to workers who were obliged to contend with climatic coh-> < ditions as as result of their employ-1 • ment in outside sections. It was de- 1 cided that in future men employed in . those particular sections should work 1 a six hour shift. The union’s dele- ■ gate, Mr W. Clark, gave a report of a recent meeting of the Miners’ Council! The Union balance sheet a*nd statements -of the finances of the picture branches were adopted. The election of officers was proceeded with-. Messrs W. Clark and R. Connolly were j nominated for the position of presi- | dent. Mr E. Potter was re-elected un- | opposed to the vice-chair. Wetport, the • large party, which was conveyed by four buses, partook of ten, san.'wie.hcw cakes, etc\ ? at the Orange Hall, w ’eh was kindly, placed at t'.ieir disposal. The excursion sts tluM were conveyed to the North Beach whe e various sports and games were indulged in. The outing which was not marked by a single accident, was much enjoyed, and the adult committee, especdallv Mrs E. F. McDonald (superintendent) should feel very pleased with the remit of their work. Jacobson, E. | Tweedie. M McM’lla u and B. Thoma-. The following bovs won races: J. 'White, E. Tweedie, J. Taylor, J. Hani son, D. Hah sen. J Brown.
