BOROUGH AFFAIRS
The report of the Borough Council Finance Committee meeting presented at the meeting of the Council this week and adopted was as follows:— The Committee meet on Dcvember IS. Present: The mayor (Mr. J. W. Greenslade) Chairman, and Crs. Kent, Kitchingham, Robertson. Williams, Wi.igham, Perotti and Carroll. The Committee submitted the following rcconinipadations for approval. (1.) That t-’e Borough Solicitor’s account be referred to a sub-committee consisting of Crs. Kent and Robertson. (2) That accounts paid since last meeting amounting to £3047 : 6 : 8, be approved and accounts amounting to £834 : 10 : 10 be passed for payment. That the reports (2) of the Treasurer, Mr. F. 11. Denton, be received and adopted. That the Council agree to the suggestion of the Australian Mutual Provident Society to pay future instalments of principal and interest at Greymouth instead of remitting same to Sydney, subject to payment of exchange between Greymouth and Wellington at half current rates. Adopted. That the report of the Gas Manager, Mr J. Kennedy, re Gas Works Department matters be received and adopted. Adopted. That a letter from Messrs Guinness a‘nd Kitehiogham, solicitors, on behalf of Mr T. G. Kitchingham, advised that their client is prepared to pay the sum of £5O towards the cost of putting a drain through Reserve 113, provided the work i is gone on with forthwith, be received ! and the work carried out. Adopted. | That permission be granted the Borough Engineer to attend the Annua) j Conference of Civil Engineers to be I held at Auckland ou Tuesday, the 17th l February and that his expenses be paid i The report was adopted •
j The Financial Committee also meet I en January 15. Present:—The Mayor I (Mr J. W. Greenslade), Chairman and Crs. Kent, Gleeson, Williams, Carroll, Kituhingham and Perotti. The Committee submits the following recommendations for approval, viz:—That accounts amputating to £762 : 7 : 0, be passed for payment and accounts amounting to £1185.1:9, paid since last meeting be approved. That the report of the Treasurer, Mr. F. H. Denton. be received and adopted. That in regard to the Gas Manager’s report, I the matter of the Gas Works motor driver’s appointment be referred to the chairman of the Gas Works Sub-Com-mittee (Cr. Carroll) to point out to the Gas Manager that the Council desires applications to be called for the posiI tion. The report was received and | adopted. That a suggestion from the j Eltham Borough Council for the relief ; of unemployment and the development ■ of land be referred to the General Comi mittee to report to next Finance ' Meeting. That the Railway Depart- ! ment be informed that the Council can- • not see its way clear to supply water under 1/- per 1000 gallons. That an ' application for damages from A. Woodhouse, Cobden, on account of an accident sustained on Cobden Bridge, be referred to the Traffic Inspector for a report. That the action, of the Mayor in making arrangements for the expenditure of £5O granted by the Employment Board be endorsed- That ' re an inquiry from the Commissioner | of Lands, Hokitika, as to what action the council was taking re Irishman’s Water Race, the matter be re ferred to the Works Committee to view same and report. That re an application from the West Coast Rugby Union for assistance in draining their reI cently acquired ground in Marlborough I Street, the Borough Engineer go into i tho matter and report . and the Union 1 be notified to this effect. That an api plication from Messrs. Guinness and : Kitchingham, Solicitors, on behalf of I Maud A. Ferguson fo r consent to subdivision of section 336, Cowper Street, be granted subject to drainage easement being granted over same and provision being made fol- access in the event of tho drain requiring to be opened. That ire Messrs. Hannan and Seddon \s adj vice that in the eveit of the closing of | Shelley Street the Crown will claim £250 compensation for its interest in j the land to be taken it is recommended that no further action be taken in the meantime. That the Council agree to the terms submitted by the Australian Mutual Provident Society for the payments due on loans to be made at Greymouth instead of being remitted to Wellington or Sydney., with exchange at half current rates between Greyinout h. an d W elli ngt o n. and enquire if any advantage will arise from this method, and they be given power to act in the matter. That in connection with the Engineer’s report re Messrs. Stratford Blair and 1 Coy., having erected an extension of j their building in Wha’J Street in wood i and without a permit. Also Messrs Stratford and Blair and Coy’s applica- i tion to erect a shavings bin in their factory yard. The Engineer’s action in; requesting the firm to demolish thej building be endorsed and that the Town I planning Committee visit Messrs Stratford Blair and Coy’s, premises, Preston .Road and report on same. That the application of Jas Mikkelsen lor a license to drive a public vehicle be granted subject to the police report being favourable. That no action be taken re Mr W. P, McCarthy, Solicitor’s application in connection with the assignment of tire estate of Chas Grams. That the offer of Robt. Middleton to pay off arrears of rent on Borough Endowment Reserve recently leased by him at Kaimata, be accepted. That Mr L. Hughes be allowed the use of a shed at the abattoir at a rental of 6/per week commencing from the 19th. instant, back rent to be at the rate of 10/- per week, and tenancy to be terminated by a week’s notice on either side. That the action of the Engineer in notifying Mr W. D. Murray to relay a drain in accordance 'with the Borough By-Laws, in place of a wooden box he laid contrary to the Borough Engineer’s intimation, within thirty days, be endorsed. That instructions be given to the heads of various Departments to economise as much as possible for the balance of the financial year and not incur any unnecessary expenditure. That a complaint from residents of Leonard Street re the unsanitary state of the same be referred to the Borough Engineer to attend to. That the action of the Borough Engineer in serving notice on Mr Mark Stevens to provide drainage through a- section owned by him at the corner of Herbert and Leonard Streets within 30 days, be endorsed. That rhe Engineer investigate a complaint re nuisance caused by water from the Dispatch Foundry Coy’s promises flooding properties of residents in Gilmer and endeavour to investigate same. That the action of the Mayor and Committee in making arrangements for the visit of Their Excellencies the Govern-or-General and Lady Bledisloe, be endorsed.
The Reserves Committee reported that at a meeting of the Committee held o:i Thursday, Jan. 22, there were present: —The Mayor, Crs. F. A. Hitching .am (chairman), Kent and Perotti. The Committee submitted the following recommendations for approval; that re rent of sections Preston Road and Blaketown, the upset rental of Section 118/121 and sections at the back of section 22 and sections 137/149 : be fixed o‘n a basis of 2/- per perch with the exception of corner sections which will be 2/3 per perch. That Messrs Harley and Coy., be appointed auctioneers, the date to be arranged with the Town Clerk—term of lease to be 21 years—buildings to the value of £l5O to be erected by the leasee within 12 months from commencement of lease. The properties to be auctioned at the end of the term of 21 years, otherwise the leases to be on the terms as existing leases. That re town belt domain survey..
