Don’nollan, J. W. Hannan, A. McDonnell. The County Engineer, Mr J. Higgins, and the County.-. Clerk, Mr M-. Keating, were also present. .The Treasury advised of the payment to tire County Fund of the fol-

lowing:-— Public Works £2085, Goldfields £3OO/13/-. l. The Public Works Department for-, warded .authority for the following votes*: Waiwhe.ro Road £l5O, Lady Lake-Bell Hill Road £2097, Main Highway protection at Nine Mile Coastal Road £3OO. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, wrote witfc reference to the metalling of the Upper Grey Road (Maruia) asking Council to pay its j contribution towards same.— Resolved to pay the amount. | The District Engineer also wrote stating that in future no distinction would be made between roads in goldfields. and ordinary road votes.—, Received. The Lands and Survey Department wrote with reference to the. proposed . gravel reserve on the Grey-Westport I Road, and asking that necessary uoi tiebs be forwarded to lessees of sections from which the areas are to be

Mr A. E. Jull, M.P., wired giving de-i tails of the unemployment scheme and , asking the Council to give the matter] consideration. The. Unemployment Board wrote forwarding details of Scheme No. 5 for 1 i employment of unemployed workers I with local bodies. i The County Engineer said they would i j not be able to get any bgckblock work 1 done under the scheme. j I Mr Mulcare thought it would be a splendid opportunity to get the work i i done that required in the Blackball * township, and which was at present bei ing provided out of the rates. He sug- • gested that the Engineer go into the j matter a‘nd find out the urgent work required to be done. The Chairman said there were a lot of mill hands o ut of work in the Paroa I Riding and a lo.t of work could be , done in this riding. i The County Engineer said £150,000 j had to bo spent by March 31st. The i Highways vote was. for maintenance, i and this for clearing the roads

The Engineer said this was the .second crossing Mr Morgan I wanted in hand, hut the funds were ' not available for the work and there j were more important works such as the , Orangipuku bridge. I Cr. Bobitison moved that the Public Works Department be asked for £4OO, 'for the Little Hohonu bridge, as the material was at present at Lake Brunner. The resolution was carried. The Waitaki .County Council wrote urging that a conference of counties be ea'-led at-an early dale to discuss derating, hospital rating, speed limits, etc. —Received. The County Engineer submitted a list of works which .could be carried [ out as u'aemployment relief under the j Mo. .5 .Scheme. This list was approved. |lt was resolved that Cr. Mulcare and the County Engineer visit Blackball land interview the Ratepayers’ Associa- ' ton icga,rdng. urgent works required I there, with a view to bringing them into the County’s plans for the relief ' of unemployment. | It was resolved to immediately make ‘application to the Unemployment Board I for a grant to enable the works to be ' commenced.
