j 3000 at Palmerston North PEOPLE RISE TO THE OCCASION. (Per Press Association). I PALMERSTON N., February 5. Close on three thousand refugees have arrived in Palmerston North and complete arrangements have been made ■ for their reception at the Showgrounds, I the racecourse and the halls and other ; buildings that were requisitioned. The Relief Committee has arranged depots for .the receipt of supplies. The biggest camp at the Showgrounds, is being used as a clearing station. It is intended to transfer the refugees to private residences. Everyone is anxious to extend hosnijtality. A complete record of the arrivals > being kept, and these will be forwarded to the police at Napier. Provisions are coining in from other districts, as far away as Tara- ' naki. The citizens have risen to the occasion magnificently, dozens of them deserting business to lend a hand jin the administration of relief. More Refugees GOING TO AUCKLAND. I (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, February 5. The motor ship “Taranaki” reached Auckland from Napier to-night. ■ She brought approximately twenty re--1 fugees, in addition to a contingent of nurses and several of the doctors who .left Auckland on the “Dunedin” on Tuesday in response to the call for assistance. About 100 children from the earthquake area will arrive at Auckland within the next few days, and will be , taken to Motuihi Island, where they | will be cared for at the camp of the Community Sunshine Association. These children will not only be cared for at the camp, but their education will be carried on, as teachers are being provided for this purpose. FEILDING HELP. | FEILDING, February 5. . The Feilding Borough Council voted | ! £5O to the Earthquake Relief Fund | las its first donation. The citizens, through the Mayor, have offered to billet one thousand refugees. A fleet of cars left this morning for Napier I to assist in the evacuation, and an- > other fleet goes to-morrow morning.
