At a conference pf medicos, at Birini ingbam recently, the subject of to- I i bacco cropped up. The president said ( | that if some method could be devised ! I of eliminating nicotine from tobacco, ' the discovery would benefit humataity because nicotine was responsible for | many and grave ills. Surely the doc- j tors taking pant in that conference • are behind the times—otherwise they 1 would know that tobacco is now being grown and manufactured in New Zealand which is practically free from , nicotine. This happy result has been achieved by toasting the leaf. That kill? the nicotine. Tobacco thus treat- I cd is rendered quite harmless. You | can smoke it even to excess with im- | punity. You cannot say that of the | imported tobaccos,- for they are mostly I full of nicotine. There are, by the I w’ay, only four brands of toasted New I Zealand on the market—Riverhead > Gold, Navy Cut No. 3, Cavendish and I Cut Plug No. 10. They are of various , strengths, but are all remarkable for their punty, coolness, flavour atad fine ■ aroma. Of course, they are being imitated—so beware! —T.T. 156.
