HOKITIKA, November 16.

The weather has continued unpleasant over the week-end, and yesterday several of the streams were swollen by the rains.

It is expected that the new road to Dorothy Falls will be opened for the Christmas holidays. The work is mostly being let on contract. The trains are to be speeded up on the Westland section as from to-mor-row. The evening train from Greymouth will on express days arrive here a 6.4 o’clock, taking for the run 79 minutes, or 16 minute*' less than heretofore. On other days it will anrive here at 6.14, taking 10 minutes longer than the expresses. The evdning train to Greymouth will be also speeded up. The evening train to Ross on Saturdays will leave at 6.35 p.m. instead of 6.50 as heretofore.

The last of the trout fry hatched at Lake Kanieri has now been placed in the Arahura River, and the hatchery will now., be overhauled. There were over one hundred pro-| r sent at the R.S.A. reunion at the Sol- * diets’ Hall on Friday evening. The I Chair was occupied by the President, . Mr D. J. Evans, while the Mayor, Mr | G. A. Perry, was also present. During ’ the evening songs and recitations were rendered by Rev. Knights, Messrs W. E. " Brown, Bulpin, J. L. Menzies, W. Shand, F. Curtain, R. C. Wells, Gilchrist, T. R. Eighty I concrete pipes were made during the month (18 inches). The reservoir kept full during the month with lift Bin. The manager of the abattoirs reported that during October there I were slaughtered 12 cows, 40 heifers, . 54 bullocks, 249 sheep, 3 lambs and 9 pigs. The Treasurer reported receipts £152 15s, payments £345 6s 4d, debit balance £162 17s Id. Accounts amounting to £475 17s were passed. Grey Watprsiders applied for use of Cass Square on January 31st, and the request was granted. The Bank of New i Zealand’s application for permission I to erect septic tank was granted. Maurice i Connolly notified that he would not retq/uire extraordinary water supply to property at Hau Hau after the 10th. J. J. Lincoln’s application to connect household drainage system with, new pipe drain in Rolleston Street was approved; also that of Thos. Stopforth for water service connection (domestic supply) to Section 3075, Weld Street( and a street crossing at the same section also L. Gooch’s application for (1) Water service connection (domestic supply) to Section 1373, corner of 'Park and Brittan Streets, (2) street crossing, and (3) that drain along the frontage he attended to; also A. E. Perry’s application fori permission to instal patent chemical j privy in Hall Street; also Wm. ThomI son’s application for grazing rights to Reserve No. 452 ( Public Park, Hau I Hau, at £3 per year, the rental to be I 10s for the first year if applicant re-

pairs fencing. An application from Newman’s Motors, Ltd., fori permission to instal two kerbside petrol pumps in front of their garage, the tanks to be underground inside the building, was referred to Public Works Committoe to deal with.
