ROUND ABOUT KUMARA

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Another start has been made preparing and erecting the poles for the electric supply between Dillmans town and Kumara. Dr Booth, who has been away in Canterbury, returned on Saturday. During her absence Dr W. McKay acted as locum tenens. The team selected by the local Fine Brigade are practising every evening in view of the Competitions, to be held in Ross among teams representing West Coast Brigades. A few small orders are coming in for supplies of timber, which, it is hoped, will continue and enable some at least, of the- local sawmills, to resume operations. Owing to the Kapitca bridge being impassably, a stop rail has been erected just past the cemetery. Many motorists going ITiom Greymouth to Hokitika get as far as the cemetery and have to turn round and take the main highway through Kumara. This three miles could be saved if a warning notice were erected at or near the local Post Office.

The death of Mrs Whelan, at the age of 66 years, removes one of Kumara’s most esteemed citizens. With her husband, Mr Michael Whelan, she had resided in Kumara tor about half a century. She was of a most kindly and charitable nature, and was highly respected by all sectious of the community. Her husband and daughters (Mrs J. Atkinson, of Beach; and Mrs P. McCarthy, of Kawhaka, Auckland) will have the sympathy of many friends.
