INDIAN AGITATION
Coercion Policy OFFICIAL VERSION. ('Official Wireless). RUGBY, Oct. 21. The Government of India’s apprec- : iation of the situation up to October 18, says:— Prompt action has been taken in The Bombay Presidency, under the ordinance promulgated on October 10. A large number of organisations that played a, prominent part in the civil life disobedience- movement have been declared unlawful, and the police have occupied the headquarter's of the- moreimportant of them. The immediate result of the action taken under theordinance has been definitely to discourage the movement. Evidence from various sources confirms the decline of popular enthusiasm and* the growth of dissatisfaction against Congress methods. A sure sign of the docreasing interest is the growing tendency for convicted persons to obtain a. remission of thein sentences by offering apologies and pledges of future abstention from lawless activities. lu Bengal alone, more than 20(10 prisoners have been so released. Despite the efforts made to belittle the Round-Tablc-Confercnce and to hold up to contempt the Indian delegates who are attending it, there is increasing recognition of its importance.
