Pierson’s bungalow at “The Beach.” The river gradually worked its way closer, and as much of the ’ furniture and of the building as possible was saved with feverish haste. ■ still patiently waiting for the answer. It seems that the petition is not in order. We heard this a month ago. - Whoever holds the petition should bring it before the Borough Council without delay, so that it can be dealt with and the work proceeded with, attd so absorb a few more of those who are unemployed. The Tows Clerk recently received word from Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., that the Hon. Mr Ransom, Minister for Lands, had approved of £.50 being placed on the supplementary estimates 'to be spent on improvements to the Recreation Ground, the Borough Council to regard it as a. £1 for £1 subsidy. Recently the Sports Committee approached the Council to have this money spent as soon as possible. The Council, in reply, asked the. Sports Committee and Football Club to meet the Domain Board so that the work might be undertaken with as little delay as possible. On Thursday evening the Domain Board, consisting of Crs G. McEnaney (chairman), Murphy, Hamer, McFarlane and Hurren, and Mr Geo. Pamment (Town Clerk), was met by Messrs J. Gilbert asd R. C. Bell, representing the Sports Committee; and Messrs McNabb and Haines, representing the Football Club. After many various ways, of improving the sports ground had been discussed, Cr Hamer moved and Cr McFarlane seconded: “that the Town Clerk write to the Minister, asking him to make the available as quickly as possible, also that Mr O’Brien, M.P., be asked to interview the Minister so that the work could be proceeded with at once. Mr McFarlane stated that, if they were sure the money would be along, the present unemployed could be engaged, and the works put in hand at once. The Town Clerk said he would carry out the Domain Board’s wishes fit once.
The Kapitea bridge, on the County Road between Kumara and Callaghan’s, via Sandy’s Hill, has a washout, stopping all vehicular traffic. The Gloom Chasers Variety Entertainers were again greeted with a good audience, at the Memorial Hall on Thursday evening. After being X-R<.yed at the Westland Hospital, it was discovered that Mr Dave Ritchie is suffering from a fractured leg, caused recently through the limb being crushed with a log. Miss Bernice A’Court, of Christchurch, is on a holiday visit to her parents, Tui Street, Kumara.
