In order to encourage | householders to undertake the some- | what arduous task of keeping a de- | tailed record of their household exI penses, prizes were offered for the most-carefully-compiled records. In all 332 budgets were received, somewhat less than was hoped for. In the North Island the first prize, of £2O, was won by Mrs M. E. Upton, of Napier; three £5 prizes going to G. R. Lomas (Mt. Eden, Auckland), A. H. Smith (Ellerslie, Auckland), Thomas Wise-Leach (Herne Bay, Auckland). In the South Island, Thomas Ragg (Geraldine) and C. F. B. Nightingale (Alexandria) shared the first prize of £2O, and one prize of £5, as it was impossible to differentiate between the merits of these two entries. The remaining two prizes of £5 in the South Island section of the competition went to C. J. Arthur (Ashburton), and William Butters (Spreydon, Christchurch). Fifteen prizes of £1 were also awarded.
