i The first games in connection with the Medal Competition were played last Saturday and created somewhat of a 'surprise, Taylorville, (the Westland ’ Cup winners,) going down to Black- . 'ball to the tune of 3 to 2. Cobden also ■ • got beaten by Rewanui, 2 to 1- The : Dobson win over Greymouth occasioned • no surprise except in the scoring 8 to, 0. It must have been Dobson’s day out , and no mistake. A word of praise is * here due to the Grey team, they come . up smiling every time, and have never missed a fixture (which is more some teams can say) rain or shine they ( fulfil their obligations and are they 'sports in the true sense of the word. I hear on good authority that they each., paid their share so that the team could 'enter for the medals. Good luck to you. may you prosper. A team to my mind , which will want some watching in the;medals is Rewanui, good hard players'! and determined to win is their watch- : word so look out yea would be medal owners for Bewanui. I am somewhat surprised at the Taylorville team they j. are not playing as they should and I . am expecting something better of them (during the next few games, you have • the players Taylorville so pull your- | together and go to it. That old . warhorse team of Blackball is never : beaten until the whistle blows, I shall j* never forget the final between Black- . ball and Bunanga for the medals, some , three years ago, what a trouncing they* Igave Bunanga the favourites. They may this season have those medals j swinging on their watch chains. Cobden slipped last Saturday and will have < to go all the way or as the saying it c “eyes out” to get into the final. I must say that the teams are in a most ,
interesting position. The draw for the medals to-day is Greymouth A Blackball, at fGreymouth. H. Hunt re I force, Blackball ought to win by about | 4 to 1 Taylorville V. Rewanui at Dob-1 son. C. Hogg referee. This will prove a stunning game and well worth seeing) Bewanui will just about land the must- I ard 2 to 1. Cobden meets Dobson at | Cobden, D. Barnes referee. This will j {be a willing go and Danny must pull his' (foot down right at the start and a [first class exhibition of the code { {should result. There is no doubt about k it these two teams can play the game , laud they are so evenly matched that I ’ predict the usual draw 2 goals each. T see by the report that the Management' Committee are. going to play the final for the Hesliu Cup at Greymouth. After .•considering this from all angles I think jit. a good idea. For one thing a big gate lis almost assured. It is central. and .what is more we want the code more firmly established in Greymouth. There ought to be two teams in Greymouth. I mean of course senior teams. A game on every Saturday, we would ! , see the crowds roll up and Soccer , would boom. I was very sorry to hear ‘that Otago could not come. I was i 5 looking forward to seeing Westland in j J action again this season, and Otago I would just have let us see what West- , • land was like. I mean this. Auckland, ' ' Wellington. Canterbury and Otago are i major associations. Westland is a i minor associations and has beaten Can-I I terbury but lost to Wellington, so if Otago had come over, we would have I seen where we were amongst the ma- | jor associations. What about the dele- | gate to next annual conference bring- | ing up the question of Westland competing for the English Trophy? II -j know this trophy is only for major as-| : sociations, but we might get this altered. ] also see in the centre’s report something about Dobson and finance. Well, we are all troubled with that complaint, so why worry? We should be proud of our schoolboys’ teams; they were a credit to the code. So is the South Island primary schools team. Well done. Mr Barrett ami your colleagues; your boys arc top-notchers; we Eft our hats to you. I hear a report is being drafted to be presented at the next Centre meeting. T expect it shall be just as good as the teams were. We await it with interest. I understand that the road is not prov- | ing 100 smooth for some of the Man-I agement Committee. The writer mi- * fortunately was drawn into the trou-) • blc through no fault of his own, and a I j couple of the members did a bit of J j bungling. Thank goodness that some jof the old heads stuck to their guns L and forced the matter right to a final. { . Dame Rumour hath if that the king i I pin apologised at the last meeting for j his action at the previous meeting. (That’s the stuff to give ’em; old heads. you win. At the beginning of the season. if you remember. I maintained j that no member of the Management : i Committee should be attached to any * club, and lam still of that opinion. )
