WATER SUPPLY
I ENGINEER’S REPORT. | Regarding the water supply improve-' ment proposals, at the Borough Conncil meeting the Engineer submitted the | following report: — < I The following proposals provide, in the first place, for the total expenditure of loan monies not to exceed £lO,000. This is in accordance with the decision of Ihe Council :d its meeting held on the 7th ultimo. The work to be carried out consists of the laying ( of a 12-inch diameter cast-iron pipe, j centrifugally lined with concrete, from j Itlic Borough Pumping Station to across Sawyer’s (’reek Bridge, at the junc-1 tion of Tainui and High Streets, and J of the following branches to that pipe., namely: (a) A six-inch diameter branch from Tainui Street, to Shakes'peare Street by way of IJeaphy Street, and (b) a six-inch diameter branch [from High Street to Turumaha Street,, bv way of Brunner Street, and the various items of detailed reticulation J in four-inch cast-iron pipe, shown on tho detailed estimate for the same;' and. lastly, the installation of a Venturi meter in the vicinity of the Pump ] ing Station. The carrying out of the above-mentioned works will assure I every resident of the Borough of an | abundant supply of water for domes-1 tic purposes, and, with the aid of the Fire Brigade appliances, will reduce the fire risk to a minimum. Appended hereto are the estimates for the carry-! ing out of the work, outlined above. | Total Estimates: —New town main and branches (concrete-lined pipe), £7,118 18s lid; Reticulation-(in detail) £1905; Venturi meter installed, £300; Contingencies, £300; total £lO,OOO. Th 5 lostimale for the reticulation of the .various streets, at £l5 a. chain are:— Marsden Road £570, Lydia Street £6O, [Shakespeare .Street £9O, William 'street £l2O, Moss Street £l5O, High I Street £l5O, Blake Street £6O, Reid. 'Street £270, Coakley Street £9O, Doyle| Street £l2O, Packer’s Quay £9O. Swift| Street to Blake Street £135. Total £1905. In reply to Cr McGinley, the En-. gineer stated that the concrete lined pipes were an improvement on the i pipes that had been used in New Zealand for 50 or 60 years. Concrete lined pipes were being used throughout the world, and had been adopted for, several large schemes in England. Cr. Kent:—Can the Engineer quote |any instance where concrete-lined I (pipes have been used for any period?! is the only test, and the Council I should not experiment with the rate-1 payers’ money. [ The Engineer replied that, although’ [he could give mi specific instance, con lerete lining would avoid corrosion. The
difference in price would bo £BOO. In reply to the Mayor, Cr Gleeson ‘ stated that concrete glazed lining, ( as proposed by the Engineer /was a | good idea. A motion that cast-iron pipes be used, l>y Cr AleGinley, had no second- ! er, and the Engineer’s report was’ adopted, subject to tho ordering of the * pipes being referred to the Works- • 'iimmit t ee, and the Engineer before 1 being finally adopted. 'l’he formal resolution that the proposals be placed before the public, was moved by Cr Kitchinghani and seconded by Cr Williams, and carried.
