The concert in connect ion with the golden jubilee of Mother Mary de Pazzi, of the Greymouth Convent will be held this afternoon at 2.30 o’clock at Columba Hall, and Bishop Brodie will preside on the occasion. A considerable number of visiting clergy and Sisters of Mercy will also attend the celebrations. The jubiliarian will be tendered a presentation at 11"- func tion this afternoon. At St. Patrick’s Church to-morrow morning at 7.45 o’clock High Mass will be celebrated, and the occasional address will be given by Bishop Brodie.

At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., the licensee of the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel was charged with (1) Exposing liquor for sale after hours; (2) open-; ing after hours; and (3) selling liquor 1 after hours. Mr M. James, who appeared f°r the defendant, entered a plea of guilty to the charge of selling, and the other charges -were withdrawn. Senior-Sergeant Rodch stated that on Saturday, August 2, at 7 p.m., Sergeant Smyth visited the premises and r found four men in the bar parlour who were in possession of drinks. The * licensee was in the bar. Another man I was found in another parlour. A fine lof £2 with costs 10/- was inflicted. O’Brien, M.P., last week: Government proposes reduction Local Bodies quota allocation of petrol tax. Please press for allocation of at least eight per cent, of whole tax of sixpence per gallon.” The following reply was received from Mr O’Brien: “Your telegram to hand, f will try and get the allocation of petrol tax to local bodies at 8 per cent, but Minister points out that 51 per cent, of fid is greater than 8 per cent, of 4d. Consequently local bodies will

•cceive more than formerly.” Mr Grcenslade sent a further telegram as follows: “Consider advisable to press for eight per cent, as no doubt due to increase price, economy will be. practised and consumption generally curtailed. Further consider local bodies fully entitled to proportionate increase in revenue with the ever-increasing burdens on maintenance of streets and the large amount collected as petrol tax from consumption in boroughs.”
