VALUELESS CHEQUES. (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, Al ay 17. Appearing- for sentence on seven charges of issuing valueless cheques and obtaining money and goods totalling £4-4. Walter .Joseph Bunting, land agent, ?.8, was (his morning sentenced to six months’ imprisonment by Mr F. K. Bunt, S»M. For nine months the police wore puzzled by Bunting's sudden disappearance. He had passed valueless cheques at Papatoetoe, Russell. ;ind Oheiiiwai in August of last year and he was not seen or heard of again until be walked into the Auckland Police Station last Saturday and give himsel/ up. ‘‘l have made enquiries from the Probation Officer ”. said the Magistrate. “I find that this man i\id oighfot n months for cattle stealing, or some cattle fraud. He was-' let out, on license, and as soon as he was out he started issuing these cheque*. Probation is out of the quest ii n. ’ ’ BREAKING AND ENTERING CHARGES. WELLINGTON, May 21. John Bernard McDonald, alias Frederick McAlister, aged 29, a slaughterman. and Janies Olsen, aged 36, a labourer. who were found on the promises of the Brand Opera House, on the night of ,10th May, were to-day committed for trial on charges of at tempting to break and enter the count ing house of J. C. ’Williamson, N.Z.. Ltd., with intent to commit a crime, and with being rogues and vagabonds in that they were found by night without lawful excuse in the- Grand Opera House building. The story was that tho night watchman found a broken file in a lock, and summoned the police, a search revealing tho two men hiding behind the seats in the- stalls.
