APPRECIATION
A Veteran’s Services PRESENTATION TO MR. J. KENNEDY. A jprese?ntat®pn was yesterday afternoon m.i’ic at the- Borough Council Chambers to Mr James Kennedy, Afanager of the municipal gas wi{rks- tho occasion being that of his completion foitty—two years’ servicel as Manager of the gas works, end also that of his seventy-fourth birthday. The presentation, consisting of a handsome umbrella, suitably engraved,, was mad*' by His Worship the Alayor r Mr J. W. Grecnsladq, who spoke in highly eulogistic terms of the long and very able service of Air Kennedy in control of the gas wojrks. He had boen undoubtedly a great asset to the municipality, havir.g rendered this public utility not only of the greatest service to the community, but financially lie had* made it an outstanding success thereby greatly assisting the Borough oil in the conduct of its administrate tion. He felt sure thes value of Mr Kennedy’s work was thoroughly realised and appreciated by tho ratepayers and the citizens generally. ,Mr Kennedy kad during his term encountered tho opposition of the electrical competition., but he, had stood up to it most, successfully, and had continued to make a most creditable success of the servic e under his direction. Mr J. B. Kent, Deputy Mayor, said it gave him vftsy great pleasure to add his testimony to the ability, energy and enthusiasm of Air Kennedy in the very responsible post 'carried out by him for so long a period. He heartily corroborated the Mavor’s remarks and joined, with him in wishing Afq Kennedy many happy returns of tho day. Messrs F. IT. Denton (Town Clerk), A. J. Fairmaul (Borough Engineer), ' AlcQueen (Wator)wo?ks Engineer). I W. Cochrane (Borough Inspector). C. Heaphy (Borough Accountant). and W. Larcombe (Borough Clerk), all joined in felicitating Mr Kennedy <>n the occasion of his birthday and in bearing witness to the courtesy and efficiency that had always characterised his administration and bis i relations with other municipal ’de- | partments. i In reply. Mr Kennedy said he ■ gyfeatly appreciated the fact that tv ; Mayor and Deputy Mayor had j so thoughtful as to be present on rfib occasion, and he had to thank them and his fellow servants of th e -Bor- ! ough for the very kind sentiments that had inspired their very acceptable presentation. It was a real I pleasure also to he able to feel that, [one’s efforts had been recognised, and he could say that it would not be his ' farjt if th e service under his charge ; did not succeed, as he liked to win I cut.
