(Our Own Correspondent.) iREEFTON, February 16. A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held on Friday, Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., being on the Bench, The licensee of the Southern Cross Hotel, George Osbourn, was charged with (1) Exposing for sale during prohibited hours; (2) Keeping his‘premises open for sale of liquor during prohibited hours; (3) Permitting drunkenness on such premises; and (4) Employing a person under 21 years of age in the bar of : uch premises. Mr J. W. Hannan ap- | peared for the defendant, and Sergeant Fryer conducted the case for the , police. After the evidence of the licensee and Sergeant Fryer had been heard, the S.M. convicted and imposed a tine of £2 10s on the first charge, and recorded a conviction on the third charge, and dismissed the fourth. The second charge was withdrawn. Two charges against the licensee of the New Commercial Hotel, of exposing liquor and keeping his premises open for sale of liquor were dismissed. Six first offenders were fined costs for being on licensed premises after hours, one second offender £1 and costs, and three third offenders £2 and costs. John Harris was fined 5s with costs, £1 Os 6d for allowing a horse to wander. At a civil sitting of the Court John McMahon was awarded £1 10s in a Maim for £23 from C. T. and J. At a sitting of the Warden’s Court reserved decision was given by Mr W Meldrum in the claim by W. A. Conlon (Mr Patterson) against E. Loughnan, L. Mcllendry, F. Rollerson, J. O’Shea, S. Taylor, J. W. Patterson, E. Patterson. R. St. J. Hindmarsh and S. C. Pascoe (Mr Hannan), for dissolution and winding up of a partnership affecting a coal mining property known as The Perfection Valley Collieries The Warden, in giving his decision, lengthily reviewed the law on the subject, and then ordered (1) That the names of James Williams (the younger) and Thomas Hubert Lee be added as defendants; and (2) Decreeing a dissolution of the partnership between plaintiff and defendants and that an enquiry and accounts be taken by, and before the Mining Registrar at Reefton; and that the Mining Registrar renorj on same and value the share and interest of each partner; and that the business be wound up by the Court The question of costs was reserved.

The following applications were received:—J. Wright ami R. Smith for a coal lease over 4 acres 2 roods 7 perches in Block XL, Reefton S.D.— Adjourned to 27th February, 1930. North Big River Gold Mines Ltd., .for reduction of rent to 2/6 per annum per acre for twelve months on Claim Licenses Nos. 4064 and 5203 from Ist January 1930.—Recommended. I). Absalom and F. Harrison for an ordinary Prospecting License over 57 acres at Snowy River.—Granted. L. M Scott for a Special Site over 5 acres at Merrijigs.—Adjourned to 27th February 1930. Blackwater Mines Ltd., for reduction of rent to Is per annum per acre on three Special Quartz Claim Licenses for twelve months from Ist Jan ua ry, 1930.—Granted.

The Reefton Swimming Club’s Carnival on Friday night attracted a large attendance. The events were keenly contested and some exciting finishes were witnessed. Mr G. Lockington. in thanking those present for their patronage, announced that the club hoped to hold another carnival in March, at which some of Canterbury’s best performers would be present.
