WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent ) WESTPORT. February 16. A very severe shock of earthquake struck Westport at 7.4 S on Saturday morning. The quake started with a slight movement, and then worked up to a big shake with a loud roar. People rushed out of their houses us they feared the falling of chimneys and other articles.

Il is the intention of the Westport Swimming Club to try and raise enough money with swimming carnivals io pay the cost of a shelter over the seating in the bath, so that when a carnival takes place, if the weather be wet 0I - fl lic> the swimmers will be there and the audience will be there also. An exhibit much out of the ordinary was the motor truck with the Burrows Hoist, put up by Munt, Cottrell, Neilson and Co., of Petone. The hoist or tipping gear is a New Zealand invention. and is worked by hydraulic electricity. This gear has been designed for the lighter class of truuK. It is extremely light in weight, while being of particularly robust construe tion. The price places it well within the reach of the f< :mall man.” The gear :s very easy to control, pressure of the driver's foot upon a small pedal sufficing to actuate it and raise the load. By simply releasing the pressure on the pedal., the load 1? automatically held in any desired po.';t’.on. It is impossible to overwind, ijince an automatic cut-out comes into operation when the safe limit of travel is reached. To lower the body, after tipjiing. a small knob,- within easy reach of the driver, is moved forward, and according to the amount this knob is moved, the body descends at the speed desired. All working parts are entirely enclosed, while the whole of the pump mechanism is submerged in an oil tank bath, ensuring smooth ac-

tion and infinitesimal wear. This exhibit is being held in conjunction with that of the Kawatiri Motors, who are showing a beautiful model Chevrolet. The distributors claim for this car a price range of “a six for the price of four” and also announce that deferred payments arc arranged for when necessary. We may expect, therefore, tltat as a result of the exhibition. the Kawatiri Motors Limited, of Palmerston Street, will have many enquiries.

Over 900 entries have been received for the Show, including juvenile exhibits. Mr and Miss Brunning are visiting Ch rist church. Mr Head loft yesterday on a visit to Christchurch.
