MAGISTRATE’S COURT
GREYMOUTH SITTING. The usual weekly si't'.ng of the Magistrate’s Court in Greymouth, presided over by Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., was hold yesterday, when a short Inst of ca-es was dealt with. A first offending “drunk.” arrested on Saturday evening last, was convicted and ordered to forfeit 5/-, the amount of bis bail. STRAYING STOCK. The Inspector of Nuisances for lhe Borough of Greymouth (Mr W. Cochran< ) proceeded again-t James Brown for allowing one Jersey cow to wander in Blake Street Blaketown. on 3rd i day of the present month. Mr J. W. I Hannan appeared for complainant. De fondant, who did not appear, was fined 5/- with costs 10/-, and £l/1/- soli citor’s fee.
Dalton Kelly, for a like offence in regard to the wandering of two Jersey cows, wa! similarly dealt with. Patrick Michael O’Donnell, for allowing a bay gelding to trespass in Shakespeare Street, on 15th April last, was fined 10/- with costs 10/-, he be ing a second offender. Solicitor’s fee of £l/1/- was also allowed. James S. Ilowson pleaded not guilty to allowing one bay gelding and one chestnut mare Io wander in Marsden Road on 24th April last. Evidence was given by the Inspector as to seeing the horses grazing in Marsden Road, lie was certain they belonged to defendant.
Defendant stated that the horses were his, and they were on the road but had ju t got out of the paddock immediately before the Inspector carfie along. His boy noticed them at the same time as the Inspector arrived when the second horse had not had time to walk off the footpath. Recalled by the Magistrate, the Inspector stated that when he was proceeding along Shakespeare Street, he noticed two horses grazing in Marsden Road. Defendant’s boy came along as he arrived there. He could not say how long they had been grazing .here 1-ut several complaints had been received about hors< s being on the road and nobody being in charge of them. His Worship sa : d there had been a breach of the by law, and fined defendant 5/- with cost? 10/ and costs £l/1/-. Th • Brunner Borough Council pro ci eded against James Stewart Nimmo for a’.owing one cow to wander in Taylorville on 25 April last. Mr J. W. Hannan appeared fo r the Council. Defeiidaa , who did not app( ar, was fined 5/- with costs 10/-, and solicitor’s fee £1 Is. Thomas Smithers was similarly dealt with for allowing two cows to wander in Taylorville on 28 April last.
