CANTON BATTLE
REBELLIOUS TROOPS Try to Overthrow Local Government. (Australian & N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received May 12 at 5.5 p.m.) SHANGHAI, May 10. Disaffected Kwangsi troops invaded Kwantung for the purpose of overthrowing the Canton Government. The Kwangsi troops attacked the Macao forts, several Chinese gunboats tiding with the rebels. A sharp engagement followed, Nationalist Army aeroplanes participating, bombing the attacking vessels, and inflicting heavy casualties. There is a temporary panic in Canton. Tt is not believed that the foreigners are endangered. (Sun Cable.) HONG KONG, May 11. Tt is reported that the Sliaineen Bund at Canton is closed. British marines have been landed as a precautionary measure. Foreign consuls and naval commanders met the Canton officials. and asked that the rebellious warships do not take action against Canton while anchored off the Shameen. Admifal Shu refused to giro assurances. Thereupon he was detained on an American gunboat. He later offered to hand over the fleet to Canton on the payment of three million dollars. This wag refused, although white flags were hoisted. Later on, following aeroplane demonstrations bv Canton, the Cantonese blew un an important railway bridge on the Kowloon-Canton railway. Hence in the meantime, communication between Hongkong- and Canton by rail will be impossible for many months.
