GRANTS BY THE BOARD. WELLINGTON, May 1. The Main Highways Board will grant a sum towards the restoration of roads damaged by the Arthur’s Baits earthquake. Schemes were approved for dealing with heavy traffic sections on the main highway Pieton to Bluff, especially in North Canterbury, Ashburton County, Geraldine and Wainiate districts, and north of Waitaki. The total expenditure will approach a-qßarten of a million. The Highways Board has approved a subsidy towards’ the cost of a bridge ever the Avon, at New Brighton, but as the local authorities want it 53 feet wide, the subsidy will be limited to the cost of half that width.
