HOKITIKA NOTES.

(Prom Our Correspondent J HOKITIKA, May 1. Steady polling is going on for the elections to-day, motor cars being very much in evidence conveying voters to the polling booths. The weather is cold and showery at intervals, but a heavy poll is anticipated. The death took place this morning at the Westland Hospital of Mr Francisco Freitas. The deceased was 97 year s old. He worked at the Hospital for 50 years. He was a native of Portugal, and had boon in the colonies 83 years. He leaves thirteen of a family, namely. Mesdames Hooker (Auckland), Giblini (Reefton), Kenning and Fox (Hokitika), and Misses Freitas (2), of Greymouth and Hokitika; and the sons are: Edward, John, Emanuel and Joseph (Hokitika), Thomas (KokKtahi), Anthony (Kumara), and Frank (Reefton). To the bereaved family the sympathy of the community is extend td in their loss. FLOWER SHOW. This afternoon the annual show of the Chrysanthemum Society was held, and equalled any of its predecessors. Mr J. J. Breeze carried out the duties of judge in the chrysanthemum classes in his usual able manner. Mrs Pres ton judged the cooking classes and Mrs and. Mr 9 the decorative and fancy work classes, Mrs G. Perry the school section, and gave exhibitors every satisfaction in ♦ heir decisions. The Yarrall rose bowl trophy for best bloom was won by Mrs IT. Fitzgerald, who also was awarded the silver cup for four best blooms. The Coulson silver cup was won by Mr Askew.
