WESTPORT NOTES.

(From Our Correspondent.) WESTPORT, April 22. An evidence of the necessity for having the Westport streets legibly named was recorded last mid-week. A lone car-driver from the country, in setting out upon his return journey, took Lyndhurst Street, in mistake for Brougham Street. In an endeavour to get home quickly he accelerated speed and reached the swamp at the end- of Lyndhurst Street—and stopped’ there. Willing hands and other cars hauled him out, not much the worse for the adventure. When asked how ho got in the swamp, after being told that he was in Lyndhurst Street, he was much surprised. “I thought I was on the road the cemetery,” he said. And he will be, one of those days, if he does not take more care! Mr R. Hawes. County Councillor and Hospital Board member, was taken to the Denniston Hospital on Saturday. Miss M. Harris, pf the Albion Hotel staff, was admitted to the District Hospital last week.

Our Mayoral aspirant, Mr G. Scandrett, is not behind the times; in fae , he appears quite up to date in some respects. In the Press Association messages of Saturday morning, the same date as that on which Ihe Mayoral address is published, there is an account of League football being played by electric light at Auckland. Whether Mr Scandrett’s mind was running in that direction, or whether it was a coincidence, part of that gentleman’s programme, as published on the same date, is in for the lighting of Victoria Square at night by electricity. There is no doubt that difficulties will face the incoming Borough Council as to the allocation to the various sports, and this idea may be of advantage, if carried out. Certainly Wtstport will have to adopt advanced ideas, or it is useless complaining that' they do not appear on the map. The final of the Kawatiri Rowing Club’s Henley fours race resulted in a win for Craddock’s crew by four or five lengths. This is the third club race this crew has won this season. Mr J. W. Niven of Seddonville has been nominated as a candidate for the Buller County and Hospital Board elections. Mr and Mrs W. Bevan left recently for Nelson and Christchurch, prior to leaving for England on May 4th. The death occurred in the Baller District Hospital of Mrs Clara Agne< Bradshaw, aged 63, who was a native of England, and resided in Mill Street. She had been a resident of New Zealand for 16 years, and leaves an adult family of three. For the County elections the nominations include the following:—James Griffiths BirchfleTd, nominated by R. J. Griffiths and T. E. Cain for the Buller Hospital Board and Ngakawau Riding of the Buller County Council; W. F. Herring. Cape Foulwind, nominated by Janies Costello and D. Bryan, for Wareatea South Riding, Buller County Council; William Henderson Mclntyre nominated by John Jack and Robert Finlayson for the Buller Hospital Board, and by John McMillan and W. Falla for Millerton Riding of the Buller County Council. The Rev C. A. and Mrs Foston, ot the Methodist Church, who have recently been transferred from Pahiatua to Westport, were accorded a public farewell at Pahiatua prior to their departure. There were eloquent testimonies to th e good work done by the Rev Mr Foston during his term at Pallia* iua. M r J. J. Boagey (circuit steward).. in presenting Mr and Mrs Fos ton with an ILM-V. gramo.phome, wished them happiness and success in their new sphere of activities. Mrs A.
