MILE IN 16½ SECONDS.

Campbell’s Attempt TO BEAT SEGRAVE’S MOTOR RECORD. CAPETOWN, April 21. Malcolm Campbell failed in his attempt at Verneuk Pan to beat Segrave’s motor record established at Daytona Beach, U.S.A. Campbell’s best average speed for twice over a mile was equal to 218 miles an hour. On the outward run of eight miles he covered the distance in two minute 21 seconds. This was against the wind and sun. The return he covered in two minutes 12 seconds with the wind and sun behind him. Notwithstanding the failure it is generally recognised that Campbell has proved Verneuk Pan to be the world’s racing track of the future.
