WESTPORT NOTES.

(From Our Correspondent.) WESTPORT, April 21. The general impression amongst the citizens was that it would be a hard matter to get sufficient nominations for the Borough Council, but they came in rush at the end. Up to Thursday afternoon, Mrs rs Jeffreys, Radford and Robertson were the only nominees, but bright and early o»i Friday morning ther e was a more rap'd movement. Messrs Fred Wood,. T. Parfitt. J. Bird, T. Fairhall, F. Keating, F. Morgan, W. Wilson and H. R. Young were nominated, making 11 candidates for nine seats. Five sat in the previous Council. There are seven candidates for three seats cn the Hospital Board, viz. Mrs Patterson, Messrs E. R. Fox and W. Caldwell (former members), and Mrs Bird, Messrs T. Fairhalt Henley and H. Nahr. The Mayoralty has two contestants, the retiring Mayor, Mr Harkness and Mr Scandrett. the proprietor of the Do minion Cafe. We have been promised an open meeting, where aspirants to the different position can have the free speech that was somewhat curtailed in the last Council. The Committee room may have been different. Up on the occasion which is promised, it would be preferable to engage the Theatre Royal for the performance. It is a good thing that nominations arc plentiful. More people will go to the poll, and the Saturday half-holiday may secure a grca.er majority. A cable from Adelaide, S.A.. was received in Westport on Friday giving tidings of the death of Mr Ingerson, husband of Mrs W. Gothard (as we knew her). It appears that a holiday trip was just about to be commenced when his demise took r Zace.

We are sorry to ?ay that Matroi Mclntyre, of the Materni y Home, is at present seriously indisposed. Mr and Mrs H. O’Malley,. th c former Secretary of the Wellington Hotel and Restaurant Employees’ Union and also of the Federation, have been enjoying a holiday. They arrived from Greyriiouth on Thursday, vi.ited Den niston and Friday, and left by car on .Saturday morning for Nelson. • Preliminary work on the erection of •th e new electric crane for Westport has been started, and the transformer is now being prepared for installa tion. When completed, it will be the biggc* t in Westpor’. The transform er, which, for the benefit of those who do not possess an electrical turn of mindy is a machine for transforming alternating current from high tension to low ten ion as used in ordinary house lighting, has t 0 be dried out before it cah be used. This is don e by passing an electric current thiuugh the windings until the temperature in the windings attains 90 degrees centigrade. This temperature is kept even until the transformer is dry, as shown by a megger test. Thc transformer' when dry, is placed in a. tank fille 1 with Iran former oil. which is specially purified. The transformer is then ready for use. The drying out process takes anything from two days to six or seven days. This work is a I present being carried out. The switch gear for high and low tension is in the course of being fitted and tested, and tho installation of the sub-station-wil' be proceeded with at an early date Several parts of the crane itself have arrived, and are receiving attention. At the Denniston Magistrate’s Court three licensees were each fined £5 costs for exposing liquor for sale af ter hours. Six eon men. for being op licensed* premises after hours, were al so fined. T.wo men, for fighting or. the main road at Burnett’s Face, were each fined 10a and costs.

The secoi’ l heat of the Kawatiri Rowing Club’s Henley fours resulted in another easy victory for the crew comprising Bradley (-J-tr), J. Daily, JErskizie, H. Williams (bow), wlio beat C. Owen (str),_ W. Casey, D. Ball, V. Caldwell (bow) by six or seven lengths.

Th e County ejections will take place on May Bth. and nominations close at noon on April 26th. The election of five country members of the Hospital Board will al o take place. The names of those who have not- paid their rates by Monday, April 29th, will be struck off the roll. This will be the. ijrst election the County is holding under the amendment of the Local Elections and Polls Act, 1926. The ballot papers will be similar to those used at th® Parlia mer.tary elections, and the old system of voting by placing a cross opposite the name of the candidate is substi tu cd by the Parliamentary strike-out system,. So far, no nominations have been received for the County Council.

Mrs G. H. Gothard left for, Christchurch recently, where Miss Rita Gothard recently underwent an operation.

Miss McDonald, late Matron of the Kawatiri Maternity Hospital, has been appointed Matron of the To Arolia Hospital, Bay of Pleii y.
