FINAL MEETING OF BOARD. The. final meeting.of the Grey Hos pit,al Board was held at the Board’s office last evening. There were pre sent: Messrs J. W. Hannan (Chairman),. A. Robinson, R. McTaggart G. Harker, R. Barrowinan, 11. G. Carter Mrs K. O’Brien, and Rev W. Bell. The Matron (Miss Hunter) reported as follows:Nurse Logan who . with Nurse Ilton, is off duty through illnes , has resigned. Nurses O’Meara, Roun ree and Mihaka are at preseat on their annual vacation, and are due to return this mouth, wh/i Nurses Campbell and Martini will be granted their leave, this bringing the annual holidays of the staff (nursing) a little in advance. Probationer Cooper has begun her preliminary training. An nual leave of the domestie staff is about now eompleied; three of this staff are at present in the Hospital, two of whom are. being temporarily relieved.—Received. Hospital statistics for the past month are as follows:—Number of patients at beginning of month:—Males 57 females 39; admitted: males 46. females 42; discharged: males 44 ftmales 48; remaining in hospi.al: males 57, females 33. Two males died during that period. There were 30 males in the Old People’s Home, and 6 females. None were admitted or discharged during the month. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT.

The Medical Superintendent’s re port was as follows:—■ Grounds —I would be glad if the lay ing out of these would be proceeded With in the near future, especially as required on the seaward side of the Hospital—around Scddon and (Victoria Wards bear a very untidy appear ance. Pa.hs are needed also, since the present state make it much more difficult to keep the interior of the Hospital clean. At the rear of the Hospital gravel should b e spread, if asphalting is not suitable. The Isolation Ward fence has been erected, and the area wi hin that fence will re eeive attention to make it tidy. Medical Staff —Dr Dcnavon, appointed as House Surgeon by the Board ot its- last meeting, has been unable to occupy the- position yet, owing to difficulties about regis ration in this country. The Health Department state that it will not be, possible to give permission before the end of May. Under the circum'-tances, Dr R. G. Stokes of Christchurch was communicated with, and 'ho • has, with ihe Chairman’s approval, taken on the work temporarily. Out-patients—lt is hoped to put the out-patients’ room in o use at the beginning of next week. It is necessary also to put a nurse in charge of these rooms, so that attendance to out-pati-ents for dressings, etc, will not iin ptde the nursing service in the oth’r pare of the Hospital, as the staff is not at present numerically efficient. Accommodation is the difficulty. Dispensary —I am of the opinion that a saving could be effected by the employment of a full-time. dispenser. as thereby the amount of pro prietary articles purchased, with .lie freight of these, would be saved to the Board. The preparation of many of these articles is not difficult in itself, but there is not the time under the present system for doing this. Year ended’3lst March, 1929—During this 12 months more work was put through than in preceding years. The number of operations of all types performed, was 674. Total number of patients treated 1125. The report was adopted. GENERAL. The Department of Health wrote concerning the ■ appointment of a new Matron; stating that it was not possible, unde r the Act, to choose an applicant who had applied unsuccessfully for a similar position at Hawera, and the only course was for the Board .o advertise the position. The Chairman explained that the Board had made inquiries with a view t saving the expense of advertising again so soon. He intimated that the Matron wished to be relieved of her duties by the 27th inst. In reply to Mr Carter, the Chairman s ated that the appointment of the new Matron would have to be ap proved by the Department, but the Board was not bound by its decision. It was agreed that application for the position of Matron close on May 16th. lOn the motion of the, Chairman, the Beard resolved to record its appreciation of Miss Hunter’s services.
