(From Our Correspondent.) The unexpected has happen'd in the Mayoral election, there being three candidates whereas no eonh-st had been, anticipated. The contestants are Messrs G. A. Perry, W. J. Jeffries and H. M. Coulson No doubt this will bo th)J most interesting of the local blee.tioUß Mr G. Heinz, who is again Standing for the Borough Council, is withdrawing from the Hospital Board, whilst or the members of the Harbour Board Messrs G. A. "Wood (Chairman), M. Houston and W. Teigle arb not seeking- re-election. Ross borough has nominated. Mr W. E. Richards to the Board. .With ten nominated, there will bo a Council election unless sonfr candidate chooses to withdraw. Mr' John L. Turner is a new member on the Hospital Board. Mr AL D. Kitt and party, of Wan- ; brought out to Pcmlbroke, four rine de' ir heads from the Matukituki Valley on Saturday. The trophies are undoubtedly the best so far secured in the Wanaka District. Th e heads are of 13, 15, 16 and 18 points rl.bpeetively, and are all heavy in the bone, of good spread, and shapely. The football season opens on Saturday, when th e Kiwi seniors play Blaketown, tho Excejlsior seniors having a bye. The Government han advised of its intention not to alter the regulations at present. The society last night decided' that application be made either to import .■■. elected opossums to tho southern district, or to distribute available kinds here already in the south. There W a fixe at 2 a.m. to-day near \Koss, the dwelling of Mr A. Hedwig*, at Donnelly’s Greek, being totally destroyed. The property formerly belonged to Mr James Woolhouse, late of Ross. Mr Hedwig is au inmate of Westl and Hospital, Mrs Hedwig ~«on and daughter being the only occupant at the time of the out bit iik. They had t.o escape in their night at--9 re. The house was out of reach of -lie water supply, but the Brigade savAd the outbuildings with of water. was resolved to point out Lake Haupiri was in the Wrey district, and the habitat of the white heron near Oka rite should be made clear. The same D, wrote that the present was a close season for pukeko, and that only a limited season was ♦allowed for duck. Shooting licenses would be available this season from tho postmasters at Hokitika, Otiia, Kumara, Boss, HariMari and Waiho Gorge. The shooting season was from Ist May to 31 July. Lt was resod ved to ask that cock pheasants in the southern district be eliminated from the license form. E. J. Andrews, was given permission to shoot deer on his holdings at Lake Kanieri, where damage was being dome. Tire Postmaster., . Hoki’tftka, notified issue of seven deer stalk Tng licenses for the Arahura-Koka-tahi districts. Banger Cederman reported the loss of a pair of Canadian Geese from Bight-hand Branch; also on ranging operations, including th;3 seizure of opossum traps set illegally and other visits to various localities. Mr Cederman stated opossums were evidently scarcp’ in the country traversed and it might be advisable to have a close season for a period. He gavo instances of poaching which he bad b»?en instrumental in suppressing. It was resolved to pay Mr Cederman lull time to date ,the incoming Council to make fresh arrangements for the future operations of tho Banger.
