QUALITY OF MILK. REQUEST TO MINISTER. PASTEURISATION ESSENTIAL. QUESTION OF FAT CONTENT. Representatives of the largest milk supply companies in Auckland waited on the Minister of Health (Hon. A. J. Stallworthy) yesterday afternoon, asking that the Government make compulsory the pasteurisation of milk for city consumption. All milk sold in the city should be pasteurised, the deputation suggested. Under existing conditions at least a third of Auckland’s milk supply was unpasteurised. The Minister promised to investigate the matter. Better supervision of conditions on dairy farms supplying mi-k for consumption was suggested by the deputation. Another matter mentioned by the milk companies’ representatives was the question of raising the fat content )f milk from 3.25 to 3.5. It had been suggested in Wanganui that 3.5 would be a des.table standard. An emphatic protest was made against this suggestion. The Auckland companies claimed that great hardship would be caused if the fat content was to be fixed at a minimum of 3.5. Morning milk could not como up to that standard. Even if evening milk were to be mixed with morning milk there would be almost insuperable difficulties jn the way. The deputation urged that the minimum of 3.25 be retained. This standard was capable of attainment, and allowed fresh milk to be delivered to consume:s. —Auckland Star, 9/2/29. Baty Bros, are now manufacturing and delivering Pasteurised Milk.
