HOKITIKA NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, February 14. The bowling tourney continues to attract keen interest. The pairs section play ended to-day, with no Hokitika competitors in the final. A Runanga pair got into the final by good play. On Saturday the bowling week will close when the club singles of the several Coast clubs will be played to decide the champion of the Coast for 1929. There will be four nlayers. who' are: Harrison (Westpuic), Holliday (Runanga), McKay (Greymouth) and Stevenson (Hokitika). Each player meets each of the others, and the player securing the most wins, becomes the holder. Each game will be of 21 heads,, and in the event of a tie the play off is to b e of 21 heads. The games will probably commence at 10 a.m. Mr F. Bade,, who lias severed his connection with the firm of W. McKay and Son, is starting business here on his own account, opposite Renton’s establishment .Mr Bade left to-day for Wellington. The Blackball annua! picnic will be held to-morrow on Cass Square. The entries for St Mary’s Summer Flower Show closed last evening, and ‘he result was very gratifying. Each section was filled well, and as a result the display should be a very fine one. The entries have been extended till 10 o’clock to-morrow (Friday) morning for late arrivals. The show opens on Friday afternoon at 7 o’clock. Exhibits will be received up till 11 a.m., when the judging begins. Th e Swimming Club is holding a carnival next Thursday, when Misses Stockley and Miller will take part. The Club has appointed Messrs Gillooly, Bergamini and Houston junr a subcommittee to attend to the deepening of the well, whence water was pumped to replenish the bath. A social dance will b c held in the Soldiers’ Hall following the carnival. It was decided to invite the Municipal Band to render & programme at the baths. D r Guy 11. Scholefield, Parliamentary Librarian., was in Hokitika yesterday, searching the ancien-. archives of the towns and taking steps to see that the old records are made safe for the future. He hopes that he will find material which will reveal more fully some of the incidents of the early days. He left to-day for Dunedin.
Steady progress is being made wi'li the Little Wanganui River protection works. One end appears to be fairly well secured, but the lower end is not so satisfactory. A scrub barrage i* being put in to check the overflow, a~id permit the area in front to make up but the height of the river bed itself has to bc reckoned with at all times. This barrage is to be about twelve chains in length. Further protective work is contemplated, including a stopbank behind the barrage, in the endeavour to hold the flood waters. On Sa'urday rue Hokitika Tennis Club will play the Greymouth United Clulj here, with the following team: — Misses Moore. Lewis, Thompson, Leslie., Knight, Mrs Baird. Emergen y, Miss Andrews. Messrs Partridge, Gooch, Keller, Dougherty, Baird, Feast. Emergency, Dr Tcichehnann. The local B team to play Kokatahi at Kokatahi are:—Misses Reid, Urquhart, Bell, E. Knight, Davidson and Mrs Guthrey. Messrs Guthrey, Macfarlanc, Williamson,. Perry. Mcln'osh and Dawson. Emergency, Diedrichs. The following players will represent the Hokitika Cricket Club in the Keller Cup competition in the match Ruatapu v Hokitika at Hokitika, on February 17th: Nightingale, Turner, Thomas, King, Stapleton. Keller,. Dale,. J. Hughes, L. Dale,. G. Bannister, Cockroft Daly Hughes and W. Coulson.
