(From Our Correspondent.) WAIUTA, February 13. The marriage too. place in Christchurch on Thursday last of Mr- E. J. Allen, of the staff of til J Blackwater M’uies, and Mrs E. Tapp (Reefton/. Mr and Mrs Allen returned home by Saturday evening’s expU-.ss, and were .the recipients of numerous congratulations from. their many Waiuta friends.

Messrs J. O’Connell and B. Davt», who have bion spending a few days here have returned to Mr Charles Porter, a well-known local identity is at present an inmat?-) of the Reef ton Hospital. The death took place at Waihi on Monday evening of Mr Thomas Lewis, a fciini ir well-known resident of Waiuta. Deceased left here some four years ago for Waihi, and, prior to his retirement on account of having contractf d minors’ phthisis, was employed as a shift boss at the Blackwater 'Mine. He was well-known amd highly respected on the mining fields of tfcu West Cuiast, and the sympathy of his W aiuta friends is xtended to the widow and family in their bereavement. Onei;soin, Clanie, is a resident of Waiuta. Messrs Bm)ith( Chairman), Thornton Lefefar (Arehit'eet), and Cole (Truant Officer), Nelson Educaion Board, paid a visit to the local school on Munday. Mr J. Purton, who has been on an extended holiday to Tasmania, returni- d homo on Friday last.. The annual school picnic and sports

were held on the Recreation Ground on Saturday last, in fine weather, and M fore a good attendance of the public. The committee worked hard to make the gathering a success, and their efforts v\Vre well rewarded. The thanks of the committee is due to the Miners’ Union pictures for supply ’lug a picture programme freUi for the children in the evening, also to those who donated special prizes. The object of tA> meeting is to decide a. date for the annual sports The club were unfortunate last year, in having a Wry wet day for their meeting. However, it is to be hoped that the clerk of the weather will bM kinder this year. The Blackwater Sports Club is to be congratulated on its (.enterprise, in framing such. an attractive programme for their annual sports, which are to be held on the Blackwater Doon Saturday, February 23rd. Thl valuable prizes offering should draw the best of thb axemen on the West Coast.

Resentment is felt locally among Union members at the .action of the Aiixander Mines Ltd., in dispensing with the services of employees who meet with accidents while following their at the mine. This ia obviously a matter for the Inangahua Miners’ UnVon to take up, and see if some redress cannot bjd obtained for their members. It is understood that only one man has been reinstated after meeting with an •iccident, and he happtmed to be the n(anagec’s nephew. ~ •
