FIRES.
MELBOURNE BLAZE. MELBOURNE, February 11. The furniture factory of Wiseman’s, Ltd, was destroyed by fire. The. blaze was the most spectacular and menacing for years. Thousands of) tons of masonry crashed into the narrow streets and through the roofs of adjoining houses. Two firemen were seriously injured. The dame is estimated at £20,000. A disastrous fire also occurred at Miniyip, when five shops and contents, and a hotel, wer e destroyed. The damage is estimated at £12,000. LAST THAMES MINE. BATTERY LOST. THAMES, February 11. An outbreak of fire on Saturday at 9.30 p.m. occurred' in the smelting room of the big Moanatiri’ battery, when nearly the whole of that room was .destroyed. Fortunately, there was nodrtind, otherwise the huge three storey structure might have gone. The brigade, with only one lead of hose, effected a remarkable save. The origin of the fire is not known. The Lucky Shot Company only finished work at 1.30 that day, removing all their melted gold and silver. Everything was all right then. The insurance wars £5OOO. This is the last battery at tfre- Thames.
