HOKITIKA NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, February 11, There was another invasion to-day by excursionists, this time from Reefton,. whence some seven hundred came iu the Inangahua district schools’ excursion. The visitors made tho Square their main rendezvous, but dispersed in Various other directions, ineluding the beach; the dredge, and Lake Kanieri. They had a lovely day, and spent a good time.

An indication of the coming Fire Brigades’ Demonstration is the erection of structure on the Square for the contests; Some 400 firemen are expected The Executive of the Reception Committee at last meeting had a deputation from the hotelkeepers of the town, asking that there be no publi: can’s jiooth right offered for the Square during the week of the Demonstration. Th e Committee gave the deputation no quarter. One spokesman said some hotelkeepers would be averse to co-operating in the accomodation of the visitors should the request be refused, but the Committee considered that they should utilise the opportunity to raise revenue by sale of the booth rights. Th , steamer Gael, which put into Westport for shelter, passed south yesterday for Milford Sound, About 300 of the Lyttelton Social Club’s excursionists visited here on Saturday, many of them motoring to Lake Kanieri. They left on return at 8.10 o’clock on Saturday night, a large assemblage of the townspeople being present on the railway station. Mr Boyns (Secretary of the Club) intimated to Mr D. J. Evans that the Committee would donate a trophy for local competition among tho children, in appreciation of what had been done locally regarding arrangements. The same Club is thinking of organising an excursion all the way to the South Westland Glaciers, and may also pay another visit to this locality next month. It is about time excursions of the kind were, organised on this side.

Hon H. L. Michel, M.L.C., is leaving for Christchurch to-morrow, to attend tho function on Thursday when the first electrified passenger train will run through t D Lyttelton. A regular service from Friday on will be maintained. Last week’s rain record here was only about two-thirds of au inch, while there was over 49 hours of sunshine. The bowling green has been tho resort of many people to-day for the occasion of the opening of the West Coast bowling tourney, which was favoured with ideal weal her. Large numbers of lambs from South Westland are now coming forward regularly. To morrow there will be a large export by train for the weekly market at Addington, comprising between 40 and 50 trucks. Th e Southern Cricket Association fixtures for the Keller Cup competition, postponed from last Sunday, were played yesterday. Rimu defeated Hokitika at the Mental Hospital grounds in a two innings match, by 24 runs. Playing at Kanieri yesterday. Kanieri defeated Ruatapu by an innings and 66 runs. Kanieri in their innings knocked up 185 for the loss of five wickets. Well was Kanieri’s best batsman, securing 105 runs, including a dozen sixes.

Sis'er Christian, representing the Canterbury Bed Cross Society, arrived in Hokitika last evening, and intends to organise classes of instruction in home nursing here and in the outlying districts. The work has been in progress in Canterbury for the past three years, and everywhere has been enthusiastically taken up. A meeting here will be arranged la er. The borough authorities have com me need tar-sealing the streets. Attention is being given first to Revell, Hamilton and Sewell Streets. Weld Street is to b e then taken in hand, and the surface tar-sealed. The authorities are arranging to put in a temporary boat landing o-i the foreshore at Lake Mahinapua, now that, the locality is becoming such a popular rendezvous. Although the roan via Ruatapu is now finished, cars and other vehicles are finding their wayround, while many proceed by boat. On the occasion of the picnic for the visiting firemen, on the 2<th inst, aquatic sports will be held on the Lake, including motor boot racing, while athletic sports wit', be held in the paddocks. The new pipe line of t,,e borough water supply for the Fire Brigade demonstration was tried out a- -he weekend, the pressure proving satisfactory.
