WESTPORT NOTES.

(From Ou r Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT, January 13. The Westport Municipal Band has decided against taking part in the M anganui Contest. It appears as though motorists are becoming much more familiar with the rules of the road. Palmerston Street is milch safer to negotiate now. When Inspector Jope thinks matters are all right in that direction, he will most likely have a lookout for those cyclists who prefer riding on the footpath to the imminent danger of pedes‘rians and small children who are just coming out at the gate in time to get bowled over. Why, considering the' condition of our footpaths, they choose these in preference to the roads passeth one’s understanding. That there is a wonderful growth of grass this summer is the opinion of everyone. It would not be advisable to give the. opinion of everyone, however, as tq why butter has gone up to Is 10d per lb. Mr R. PowelL son of Mr R. Powell senr, at one time a dentist here, and a former Borough Councillor, is on a visit to Westport.

It was decided to send some crews, if possible, to Wellington regatta on February 16'h. Despite the weather, the takings at the recent swimming carnival amounted to £l2 15s.

Mr Calder, on the teaching staff of the Auckland Grammar School, who has. been visiting ’Wes'port, has left for .Greymouth. He is a grandson of Captain Price, who was at one time stationed fa Westport in the interests of the Union Steam Ship Coy. Mr R. The steamer Tredennick. after taking in 900 tons of bunker coal, has sailed for Sydney. The Tredennick is a vessel of 4596 tons gross, and 2846 nett; length 420 feet, breadth 52 feet, depth of hold 25 feet.

The heavy rain on Friday caused a temporary flooding in town, but it did no damage. The slip in the Gorge at Little Hawk’s Crag was. however more troublesome. It was composed of rock, and as a result of slipping into the cutting it piled up to a height of about 20 feet. The cars were held up until on Friday evening the Public Works employees put in a couple of shots and brought down a lot of loose material. The slip would have been comparatively easy to clear but I° r the fact that it came down in a cutting. A washout occurred near Arnold's, at Three Channel Flat. Nearer home, a hole was, scoured in the road on. the hill near Norris’s, but no other damage resulted.

The silver jubilee in religion of Sister Mary Gertrude (Horn), of the local Convent- of Mercy, was last week celebrated. Rev E. Phelan, P.P., celebrated a “Missa Cantata. M and present in the sanctuary were the other local fclergy, Revs J. Long and J. McGrath. The visiting clergy were: Rev Jos. Herring (Reefton), Rev F. Rasmussen, S.M., D.D. (Greenmeadows), Rev B. The music of the mass was beautifully rendered by the Sisters’ Choir. After tlje conclusion of the Mass, the friends assembled in the community room, tastefully decorated for the occasion, where they partook of a dainty repast, prepared by the Sisters. Mr J. J. Molony, on behalf of those present, congratulated the jubilarian on having completed twenty-five years in the service of God. and wished her “nd multos annos. ” Mr Mann, brother-in-law of Sister Mary Gertrude, suitably acknowledged the good wishes.
