MOTH PLANE CRASHES. MELBOURNE, January 15. A moth plane crashed at Port Melbourne and was badly damaged. The pilot and a woman passenger were unhurt. They refused to giV? their names., HINKLER’S GOLD MEDAL. PARIS, January 11. The International Aeronautical Federation Congress to-day awarded Hinkler a gold medal for the finest aerial exploit in 1928, when he flew from England to Australia. LATER. Kingsford. Smith, Wilkins, Deia, Cierva (inventor of auto giro) and the Frenchman Costes, who flew round the world; also the Italian, Terrarin, who flew from Italy to Brazil, each revived only one vote below Hinkler for the International Gold Medal.
LINDBERGH’S LATEST VENTURE NEW YORK, January 11 Lindbergh announced that on February 4, he ’—• starting on a protacted Central American cruise, in a twin motored Sikorsky amphibian, carrying mail from Miami to Cristobal. (Canal Zone) blazing the trail for an air mail route to be inaugurated by PanAmerican Airways Incorporated. He also announced that he would henceforth be technical adviser to the later organisation and its affiliated operating companies. FIVE U.S. SOLDIERS KILLED. NEW YORK, January 11. At Middleton (Pennsylvania) five soldiers were killed and three seriously injured whefi an Army aeroplane crashed there to-day. RECORD ORDER FOR MOTHS. LONDON, January 12. A hundred Moth aeroplanes, a record individual order for Brit I. h aircraft, has been received by De Havfllands, from Canada.
