WESTPORT NOTES.
(From Our Owu Correspondent.) WESTPORT, December 13. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening, the Mayor (Mr Harkness) in the chair, and there being also present, /Councillors Fox, Bowater, Bird, Bradley. Wilson, Williams. Robertson and Fairhall. The first business was in respect to the balance sheet. The motion that the balance-sheet be settled and adopted v ' ns carried. There was a request from th e Westport Athletic and Cycling A-sociation, to have the fenet in front of the grand stand shifted back 10 feet, and to have the racing track rolled. Cr Williams moved that the fence be removed altogether. Cr Wil-on seconded pro forma. Cr Bradley moved an amendment that the fence be moved back 8 feet. Cr Fairhall seconded. The amendment wa-
rn rried. The Cricket Association asked for fhe use of the Square on De comber 31st, which was granted on tie usual conditions. The application fo? Borough Inspector and Engineer were tht n introduced, and Cr Wilson proposed and Cr Bird seconded that tht Council go into committee on the ap plications. This was carried. The Morris Motor Fire!- Engine is being delivered at the Fire Brigade Station to-day. and a meeting of the Fire Board is being held this even ing. It is understood that the old mo lor engine will be kept as a stand by after getting an overhaul. Formalin has found to be , in addi tion to a disinfectant, a rat extermina tor. A Westport resident, who had been pestered with a nest of rats ii between the weather boards and the lining, bored a small hole and syringed the rat’’ nest. There was a scamper but it was the last. Although! some days have elapsed, the rats have nol returned, nor has there been any indication of any about the premises. Two of the latest Kohen hydraulic saloon chairs have been purchased by Mr W. J. Dunn for his now premise* in Central Palmerston Street.

Farr made the early running, but in the second lap. Larsen put on the pace and won bv 20 yards. Deere, after making a desperate effort to keep pace with Larsen, dropped back and retired.
