MINER’S FUNERAL.
BROKEN HILL, December 6. George APa-i, who was killed in the mine, was given a Socialist’s funeral, no minister being present. The funeral procession was headed by the Red Flag. Orations at the graveside were delivered by the Secretary of the Minority Movement, and the “Red Flag” was sung. LIQUOR AT CANBERRA. CANBERRA, December 6. The Prime Minister stated that arrangements will be made for liquor to be available for tourists during the Christmas season. A temporary arrangement will be made whereby liquor will be sold at two of the Commission hotels, pending the establishment of a permanent systtm. QUEENSLAND TRAGEDYBRISBANE. December 6. A Bowen message says: The body of a man, named Buchanan, who disappeared recently, was found in the Bowen River, with a bullet wound in the back. Foul play is suspected. Black trackers are following tracks near the scene of the murder. GIRL BATHERS DROWNED. MELBOURNE, Dec. fl. Violet Lewis, eight, and Ailcen Lacj y .ten, were caught in a strong undertow, and carried out to sea and drowned off the South Melbourne beach. Two others were saved. Harry Brest, lifesaver, after strenuous efforts brought 'on I girl ashore, but efforts to revive her failed. * r h body of the other was later washed ashore. ABO FATALLY CLUBBED. PERTH, December 7. During a fight between natives over a lubra at Port George, one was killed, being struck on the head with a club. The other natives concerned in the fight decamped. BOMB OUTPACE SUSPECTS ARRESTED. MELBOURNE, December 7. A party cf police, under the supervision of Detective Dunn, who is in charge of the bomb outrages investigations, arrested five men, who were remanded on vagrancy charges until further inquiries are made. PETITION FOR REPRIEVE. SYDNEY, December 7. Over three hundred residents of Woy Woy signed a petition asking that the death sentence passed on Martin Ja ; cobsen, for a capital offence on a girl, be reviewed. Public indignation has
bc'-n aroused over the sentence. Jacousen was formerly engaged to a girl, who was among the first to sign the petition. Public meetings are being held in the town, and feeling is high. It is said that new evidence would be available if the ca. e were re-opened.
John McDermott, alias Patrick Mt Dermott, appeared at the GreymoutMagistrate's Court before Messrs F. H. Kilgour and A. Naylor, Justices of the Peace, charged that (1) with being a rogue and vagabond within the meaning of the Police Offences Art. 1927, in that he was found by night without lawful excuse on the enclosed premises of the Greyniouth Gaol; and (2) that, in breach of the Prisons Ac?, 1928. an<l the regulations thereunder, he did attempt to deliver to a prisoner in the Greymouth prison, Joshua Thomas Carson, a parcel of food. A - cused pleaded not guilty to bot’i charges, and asked that a remand be granted to allow him sufficient time to secure legal advice. A remand'was until Monday next.
