BYRD’S EXPEDITION.
SHIPS DEPART. Commander's Farewell Message. (Ter Press Association). DUNEDIN, December 1. The City of New York leaves about three this afternoon for the Bay of Whales. Commander Byrd, in a farewell message. says: “When I told the people uf the United States we were going to make our departure for the Antarctic from New Zealand, 1 soon became aware, from hundreds of remarks, that the people of my country have the highest regard for the people of New! Zealand. Since our arrival here we have had every evidence that the friendly spirit of my country is reciprocated. We have received cour tesy and hospitality from all sides; and for my shipmates ami myself. I wish to express our deep appreciation. We are delighted that we decided to make our departure from this country, ami we will be delighted to get back to it again, after our task is completed. All members of the expedition extend their best wishes to the people of New Zealand. We should make every effort to uphold the traditions of Scott. Shackleton. Mawson and AinundLATER. The Eleanor Bolling and City ot New York., with Commander Byrd and an advance party of 50. left Dunedin shortly after 6 a.m. to-day for the frozen regions of the Far South. They will proceed to the Bay of Whales, where a base will be established, and where the party will remain, while the Eleanor Bolling return.- to Dunedin to pick up the aeroplanes, which had to be unloaded at the last minute, owing to the excess of top hamper on the deck. The ships were accorded an enthusiastic farewell, and left with many expressions of the hope for a successfid voyage and a safe return.
