CAR SMASHED BY TRAIN.
ONE OCCUPANT KILLED. Others Seriously Injured. DRIVER ARRESTED FOR DRUNKENNESS. (Per Press Association). HAMILTON, December 2. A goods train crashed into a ear at the level crossing at Frankton on Saturday evening. Four of six passengers were sent to hospital wifi serious injuries. The injured arc as follows. Mary Scown, aged 6 (Frankton); head inj uries—critiea 1. Alexander Hamilton, 30, labourer (Frankton), concussion and head in juries—critical. C. Scown and son. 10—less serious. Mrs Scown escaped. Patrick Degan. of Glen Afton, miner, was the driver of the car, which was turned completely over, and burst into flames. The engine driver, stoker, and passersby rushed and extricated the passengers from the burning car. LATER. A level crossing accident occurred at Frankton Junction yesterday afternoon when a car driven by Patrick Deegan, aged 48, miner, of Pukemiro, and containing five other passengers— Mr Alexander John Hamilton, aged 31. married (Frankton); and Mr and Mrs Charles Francis Harold Scown, and their two children, Charles, aged 10. and Mary, aged six, collided with a goods train approaching Frankton from Mercer.
The car was overturned and caught fire. Hamilton died in the hospital from head injuries three hours later, and the condition of the boy Charles Scown, is critical. The injuries of the father and daughter are also serious. Mrs Scown and Deegan escaped lyDeegan was afterwards arrested for being intoxicated while in charge of a car.
