BIRKENHEAD’S PENSION
DEBATED IN COMMONS. “SETTING HIMSELF UP FOR AUCTION'.” LONDON. November 23. In the Commons reference was made to Lord Birkenhead’s pension. In the Course ’of the debate on the bid increasing the Judical Committee of the Privy Council, Mr Hudson said: “We axil confronted with one of these judges setting himce’if for auction, seeking positions, and making it clear that he is out for a great deal more than he has hitherto received. Wo should make it clear that there is no place for such, a man in the High Court' in future. These things make people think. 1 must not be taken as in the least criticising Lord Birkenhead, who has tak*m a course to which he is perfevlWp entitled us far the rules on const-tutionul piacticc arc concerned. The best check °n errors of judgment should be public opinion. ’ ’
Lord Wedgewood Benn said that Lord Birkenhead enjoyed judxca» emoluments and pained commercial emoluments at th) > same time. Sir T. Inskip did not agree that the pension was in consideration, oi judicial duties being performed at the present time'.
