WESTPORT NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT, November 13. The Westport Municipal Band are to attend the Competitions at Wanganui, to bp held at the end of February and the beginning of March. They have entered in all events. At the monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board, there were 185 applicants for 12 teacher vacancies, rhere were 12 applicants for Headmaster for Granity School. The Board appointed a teacher, subject to the approval of the Senior Inspector. Mr Harold Salmon, now at Westport State School, was appointed Headmaster at Waimangaroa, and Miss K. Wills, assistant. Miss Evelyn Paul was appointed t 0 Millerton. The Board decided,. on the motion of the Hon' Mr Mclntyre, seconded by Mr Harkness, to apply to the Education Department for the erection of two infant classrooms and an infant sanitary block at Westport School, in place of the present old wooden building. The Department is also to be applied to to erect a shelter shed and outhouses at Tiraroa School. An application from the Granity Committee for the erection of a manual training building at Granity was turned down in the meantime, inquiries to be made into the present transport system to the_Millerton main centre. There appears to be no dirty work going on in the Buller electorate this election. Perhaps everybody realises that there is no election of a candidate in the balance. There is, of course, an effort to get a good poll for the Licensing referendum. The ‘Reform candidate, should he ever again contest an election, will certainly have to change hig views mor e in conformity with those of his Partj[ leader. At present, his views’and Harry Holland’s arc more in accord. Miss Osborne, who has been on a visit to Mr and Mrs R. Hagedorn, has left for Greymouth. Mrs Thomas and daughter, of Denniston, left for Christchurch yesterday. Mr and Mrs McArthur, of Ngakawan. have returned from Christchurch. Col. Brereton arrived from Ngatiomoti on Saturday, and attended the Returned Soldiers’ reunion at Mokihlnui on Saturday night. Mr and Mrs Allan Atchison, who '/ a - V .M been visitin S Christchurch and It elllngton, have returned to Westport. , Mrs Stevens, wife of Mr A. Stevens district Stationmaster, has returned from a visit to Nelson. Mr W. Archer, of the local P. and T. staff, has left for Denniston to relievc as postman-operator. Messrs J. M. Robertson. Codyre, McKay, Dean, Sloe and Scanlon have returned from Christchurch.
