HOKITIKA NOTES.

_(From Our O*rn Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, November 1. Mr R. Wild, accompanied by Captains BalJ and Ingram, left by this morning’s express for Auckland, in connection with the purchase of a 50t.on steamer for the Southern trade. A number of local people left by this morning’s express for Christchurch, to attend the racing carnival in that city. Mr H. P. Uiu. one of the candidates for the Southern Maori seat, who briefly visited this dis'rict, to-day returned to Kaiapoi. A Dunedin' company, the Gold Development Corporation, wi'th £3O 000 capital, floated last week, is taking up a claim on the Five Mile Beach Okarito, South Westland, which has been tested both wi‘h the keystone drill and hydraulic elevating, with satisfactory results. The prospecting operations, on which £lBOO was expended, were carried out under Mr R. T. Stewart, engineer, of Dunedin.

•The Hokitika Lawn Tennis Club’s opening day will be on Saturday, and members of other clubs have been invited. In the morning, commencing a* 9.30 o’clock, a tournament for junior members will be held, and .junior girl members aro asked to bring a plate. In the, afternoon, the usual raided doubles tournament for senior members will be held. An effort to raise £4OO for expenditure in connection with the entertain ment at the Fire Brigade Demon st raion, to be held here next year, is being made. At a meeting last evening. Fire Superintendent J. T. Mclntosh stated Miss Duff had kindly offered to organise an entertainment, for the second week of next month, to assist the funds. In all, about £4OO would require o be raised locally, and the present effort was a beginning. Miss Duff was appointed Organiser and Directress; Miss Giese, pianiste; Messrs Lynn and Brooks, stage managers; and Mr D. J. Evans, business manager. The weather hero has been chilly for he start of the summer, the wind off the ranges being a cold one. though in thp evening', it has had the effect of refracting the light in such a manner amongst the moving clouds as to render the sunsets both unusual and beautiful.

O’Neil (Kokatahi) R. Eastgate. W. Stopfor'h, W. J. Butler, S. Godfrey (Koiterangi). Jas. Fitzgerald (Wainihinihi) J. Cloher (Matainui), A. J. Thompson, M. Sullivan (Weheka), J. Devaney O. Head (Kanieri). At a meeting of the Westhind Racing Club Committee yesterday, at the course, the stand accommodation was inspected, and proved satisfactory. The mn ter of extending the racing track to provide for a straight start for races from six furlongs was looked into. This will be carried out later on. The Treasurer submitted a statement of the finances and particulars of ‘he debt adjustment, which were approved. It was stated the debenture holders were agreeing to a reduction in the rate of interest to 6£ per cent., and hat it would be possible to make an annual reduction in the principal owing by careful husbanding of the finances. The starting machine of the Reef ton J. C. is to be borrowed for the next meeting, and Mr J. Medhurst (Blenheim) wrote that he would forward his patent star ing release to replace the one lost in the fire, free or charge to the Club. It was decided to accept with thanks the local Band’s offer to supply music gratis.
