Her daughter, Mrs Baiinie, when performing household duties, tripped a£ she was carrying a bucket, of hot wa ter, and was scalded. She wont to a neighbour’s for assistance, and while away a spark from the fire ,sot alight some clothes, which in turn set. the mantelpiece on fire. Fortunately the fire was discovered in time to avert serious .danger ami was extinguished before much damage was done. The local observer for the Dominion Meteorological Department reports that there were 30 hours 0 minutes of sunshine and 5.31 inches of rain fell for the past week. Mr C. E. Barnes, of the Railway Department, has been visiting Hokitika in connection .vith the visit, of the Empire Forestry Delegation next month. It is understood the party will stop over hor<» one night, and the next day proceed as far as Hatihari and return to Grcymouth. Captain Watts, Advisory Superintendent, on behalf of the New Zealand Lire Brigades’ Association, arrived at Hokitika on Saturday, and yesterday morning made an official test of the Hokitiici Borough Council’s water supply in connection with the approaching I’ire Brigade:’’ Demos-tration. The le•ult of the test was highly satisfactory, ample pressure and supply being availab’o. As a result of the test, the N.Z. Fire Brigades’ Demonstration has been fixed to be he’d on Cass Square, Hokitika, during the last week in February of next vear.
