£5O BETTING FINE. HAWERA, August 25. Patrick O’Connor. billiard saloonkeeper, pleaded guilty at the Mannia Court yesterday to a charge of keeping a common gaining house. The police said the documents reized showed that defendant took £2OO in bets during the Christchurch race week. Counsel submitted that the real amount was disguised, and defendant s operating only in a small way. Magistrate Tate said that he would take into account the action of the de fendaat in making a full confession. He inflicted a fine of £5O. A. LIVELY SATURDAY NIGHT. CRI-STCHURCH, August 27. Henry Joseph Danvers, 22, pleaded guilty to the theft of articles of clothing nt Masterton. and was sentenced to two years’ probation. AGAINST THREE NEWTON KING STAFF MEMBERS. ELTHAM, August 27. At the Magistrate’s Court on Frida* and Saturday, further barges of theft and conspiracy against members of Newton King, Lids Kaponga branch were heard before Justices’. There wercl eleven charges of theft against Hector Ilar.ey Henderson, iu volving £463, extending over four years, from May, 1922; five theft, charges against Morgan Whittaker Priest, totalling £9B;' and five of theft against Jamc.i Harold Adam-/ totalling £9O. The three accuse I were charged jointly with conspiring to defraud Newton King, Ltd., of £1419 in April, 1927. Alternative charges for th e saniq offence were lail against Henderson and Priest. The statement of claim is that tho Gale, when hi a dangerous situation off a lee shore, signified acceptance of the Kahunui’s request if assistance was required. The tug got a towline aboard, and towed the Gale to WelTingtin. It is claimed that the tug was instrumental in saving thj, Gale and the lives- of thos3 aboard, and that couaiuorublu risk ha-.l been incurred in taking the tug in to the Gale i)i her precarious position.
